Pixel Art / Re: A bin

Looks better, but I might recommend making the edges of the smoke, especially higher up there, blended towards darker shades. I'd also say give it more of cloud-like shape, "billowing" or whatnot. At the moment the smoke still just looks a little too flat. A background around the trash fire might be nice too in order to add the variety and color that a trash can will inevitably lack. Maybe, a subtle red reflection on the metal will improve the color variation as well as give the impression of intense heat and fire.

In that particular stance he looks like he's being crucified. :D You may want break the symmetry of arm and leg positions in the pose, and give him a more interesting stance.

your forum rules terrify me and i would really never want to be part of such a strict board. to be brutally honest though, i think you made the rules because you are anal and need a feeling of control and orderly conduct. good luck recruiting and keeping members on such a strict board.

Have you ever made a game before? You must be strict and dedicated to make a game. Spend your time well, and you can do great things. :)

Personally, I don't see how having rules will really help a person create games. People know not to act like a tit, swearing in moderation should be perfectly fine, in my eyes. Most of the people I know that actually make games are the ones that don't have such strict boundaries imposed upon themselves. Myself included.

I suppose you might have a different perspective. Sure, I can see this being precautionary, but I wouldn't outright ban swearing. I would, however, warn anyone who crosses the boundaries and starts cussing in excess. I fail to see the how the usage of colloquial language and interjections have any adverse impact on one's ability to create games.

Making games simple require creativity and the smarts (not really even this oftentimes) to accomplish it, and the time to work on it. Nothing else is really necessary.

Yarrr. I... sort of attempted starting on this.

I wasn't sure how to show wise-cracking, so I just went for somewhat angry. Except I haven't finished obviously, hence it just being scribbled lines, oh well. Feel free to color and fix my line art!

General Discussion / Re: Partial Transparency

GIMP, while having lame GTK interfaces in spots, manages to do some things okay. It can save as PNG, and preserve alpha, and it has layers. It's by no means lightweight though. http://www.gimp.org/windows/

As for an application that handles transparency adequately enough and isn't processor intensive, I can't really think of one...

It looks nice, but there's still no possible way a person's leg could twist like that unless her joints were broken. Adjust the left leg (our right), so that her foot won't point inwards like that. It just doesn't look natural.

Other than that, it's pretty awesome stuff. Good work.

I don't think dithering has any bad effect on it, but it could possibly benefit from being a little brighter in spots to give a more luminous effect.

I think the original was fine, but I have no problem with the slightly altered colors, as long as gradients are NOT considered. Gradients make baby jesus cry, especially when the style was intended to be cel-shaded.

The only problem is, as Camus said, it'd help to see more sprites in this style. Possibly an animated version of this sprite would make it a that much more awesome, like a dance or seductive walk of some sort.

dont want to sound too noobish.. but how did you getthe pictures onto your GB's..

A camera, or google images, then Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or Gimp would easily suffice. Any of these tools make it possible to paste a mockup as a seperate layer and use a perspective tool. Then, you'd probably want to add some reflected light over top, since it's supposed to look like plastic, not two images pasted together. Also, you've gotta make sure you leave a bit of room for the black frames around the screen, so it doesn't look too obvious. If it's a backlit screen, you'll want to brighten the mockup. If it's not, you might want to dim it a little (if we're talking original GBA). If done well, it might be believable hoax art!

General Discussion / Re: Pixel talk

Wikipedia knows all.

Pixel - "A pixel (a portmanteau of picture element) is one of the many tiny dots that make up the representation of a picture in a computer's memory. Usually the dots are so small and so numerous that, when printed on paper or displayed on a computer monitor, they appear to merge into a smooth image."

Dither - "Dithering is a technique used in computer graphics to create the illusion of color depth in images with a limited color palette (quantization). In a dithered image, colors not available in the palette are approximated by a diffusion of colored pixels from within the available palette. The human eye perceives the diffusion as a mixture of the colors within it. Dithering is analogous to the halftone technique used in printing. Dithered images, particularly those with relatively few colors, can often be distinguished by a characteristic graininess, or speckled appearance."

Sprite - "In computer graphics, a sprite is a two-dimensional image or animation that is integrated into a larger scene."

Pixel Dump - ...Well okay, it doesn't know everything.  Not in the wikipedia, but I'm pretty sure this term denotes sketches and random artwork done using a pixelling technique to draw them. "Dump" probably connotes they don't necessarily reflect the artist's best work, and display their skill in its unpolished form.
