Pixel Art / Re: Frog Temple Platformer
« on: January 24, 2015, 03:44:55 am »
I'm not sure if the primary light source is supposed to be the lava or the shafts of light from above, but in either case the shadows cast by the platforms onto the wall are in a totally wrong place. The platforms and their shadows seem to suggest that the light source is somewhere to the left of the viewer, but nothing else does. Maybe I'm over analyzing (given the cartoony style)... but that's the only thing that stands out to me. Looks really cool.  :y:

Yeah, you're right. I'll try flipping the beams above. Thanks. :)

Very appealing style, I like it :)

Rough idea on the underlight. I dunno..

Nice edit, thanks!

Hey guys. Here's a work in progress for a game. I've been asked to use dark outlines in the style and to give it a bit of a cartoony look. I'm hoping to underlight the platforms with light from the lava at the bottoms, though this is proving to be pretty tricky. Would like some thoughts on color, especially with the lava, which is still rough, but I'd like to try to get the color on that right before trying to animate it. I'll upload progress, but any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

And here's the character animated.

This is the best yet. Face looks good. You have the best bits of the costume and the textures are nice. The pose works, and the style is very clean. I love it!

I posted one response on PixelJoint, but I thought I'd elaborate regarding my comment about the face. Don't think you need to go so realistic as Night did with his edit, but I feel the shape is just a bit straight and flat. Once again I have to say I really love the hair. xD

The shadows on the tail don't match the shadows on the body.

Thanks! Any chance you could give me some pointers as to how you think it should be? Light source in my mind is up and left.

I can't tell what those ridges on the center back are.  Seats?  Scales?  Coils?

They are ridges. xD I took the name "Ridgeback Dragon" very seriously. They're meant to be just big wonky slabs.

I quite like the new tree, though the contrast of the trunk is rather different to the contrast of the leaves, which looks a bit odd to me. Wouldn't think the darkest patches of leaves would be so much lighter than the darkest patches of trunk.

Pixel Art / Dragon [C+C] Textures, color and form

There's an odd pixel here and there that could be fixed, but I mainly want some thoughts on how to give the dragon more texture. So far I've added some scaley bits, but I'm sure there's probably more I could do to improve them.

I'm also looking for critique on form and color. Also, the shadow is rough right now, but I don't really know how to even approach making it accurate.

Thanks!

Had a go at fusing a couple of cave story characters. All feedback is much appreciated!

The hat looks cool. In the original, it is ambiguous where the tail is given the limited colors. The tail might therefore be at the back, which is slightly more ghostlike, and slightly less speech-bubble like. In the blown up version the tail could be at the back, then. In the originals, the squareness is less, and the tails are thicker, so there's some leeway to experiment with these to make it more ghostlike.  The tiny versions are presumably more abstract than the cutscene versions, so there are probably a few more little details you could add to hint at ghost.

One other thing I notice is that the cutscene version is way higher contrast and way higher resolution. I'm not sure it would feel in place in a game with the smaller sprites. Difficult to see without seeing the original game, but maybe these are things worth considering.
