General Discussion / Re: Official Off-Topic Thread

I can kind of see it from both sides on the whole gameplay thing. Like I'm in two states of mind about knytt stories, because on the one hand I'm wondering around the world thinking mmmm this is a lovely little relaxing experience, really enjoying the atmosphere. Then on the other hand I think, "hey wait a sec, where the hell is my "gameplay"?"

Then you have something like Super Metroid that has all the exploration and atmosphere, on top of those core mechanics that some say are essential to a game. But you could say that if knytt had a smilar structure it would be overkill, and actually end up taking away from the whole relaxing atmosphere thing. So it's a tough call, do I prefer the simplicity of Knytt, or the more intense Metroid? I say, it depends what mood I'm in. I can appreciate both.  :)

I guess he's busy busy with stuffs. He had an awesome avatar on here, I think it was like a mini cyberdemon.

Spelunky HD looks great. apart from i keep seeing the caveman as wearing a balaclava.

mmm this style is quite delicious imo, but your tree trunks are too large in comparison to the mass of leaves. either shorten the trunks, or add more foliage. also i have a thing against pure black outlines, i think it would look nicer with uber dark brown on the trunk/dark blue on the leaves, thats just my personal nitpicky preference tho. :]

ohh massive potential in this piece, looking nice as is. Be sure to render the tree/trunk and figures much sharper than everything else, if they are going to be the focal point.

Obviously, this guy doesn't neglect his traps when he works out.

I second the statement about the little guy, needs more detail.

I'm not a massive fan of the colours to be honest but I really love your texturing, especially on the wooden platform. <3

totally agree with alspal, the broken outlines don't help, especially with using pure black on the outlines. If you're going to have everthing playable with an outline, then give one to the yellow/black striped objects too.

Also consider lightening up the outlines a bit, pure black is too dark imo. Maybe something like this?

I really like this character, if you bring everything up to his standard you'll have a lovely looking game.  :)

Yeah, I've been itching to try Graphics Gale and Promotion, but right now I'm on a MacBook.  I have it duel booted, so I could get them for XP, but it's a hassle to switch back and forth from XP to OSX--it's something I don't do very often.  I know that there was a pixel program for OSX (programmed by ndeal I think?) and I've tried it out, but it was really unstable.  So right now I think my best option is Photoshop.

Ah, fair enough then. Not sure if ndeal actually programmed pixen but yeah pretty sure he was involved somehow. And yes pixen is terribly unstable, which is unfortunate because it's a nice little program. As for the photoshop problem, I've read about it somewhere before, but can't remember anything specific, sorry.

I quite like the new colours actually, though what I said earlier about the greys and magenta still stands I think.

though i've taken no references outside my head.

Definitely get some references for this. If there's one thing you're going to need references for, it's anatomy. At the moment his arms and legs feel very tube like. He also lacks a crotch! I am not a fan of the dithering at all, it's unneeded noise.

The colours also feel a bit too murky, try using some blues for the shadow on his skin, and possibly some purple for the jacket shadows, not too saturated though! The upped contrast is a good move imo.  :)

I like what you have so far. I think there are two main problems with the sprite; the colours and the pose. Bowser doesn't suit an upright pose like this, you can bring the legs further apart, and have him leaning slightly lower and more forward. Give the arms a more aggressive position too. Something more like this.

With the colours I'd say you need a little more contrast, possibly a little less saturation, and some hue shifting (search this term if you don't know what it means.)
