Portrait for a mobile game

on: November 22, 2005, 03:25:21 pm
before any thing, this IS NOT Dr. Wily...

it's Daniel, the boss of a snooker game I'm designing
Camus was the one that pointed it out, since I've only player megaman X, like... this one time... I dont think I made the first level...

the hole old guy image is to make him look really experienced and all.

some of the old portraits can be found here:

tell me what you think

Image size doesn't matter! It's what you do with your pixels that counts!

I like this alot. Hair on the top of the head could be illuminated more. Your pixeling is a bit dirty around the top of the head as well. The eyes stand out really well against all the flesh and hair tones. Shouldn't the ears get a step darker? They seem too light now. Sweet stuff. More portraits to come?

whoa. nice stuff again. :)

I can't for the life of me do caricatures(spelling?) like that. Never have, never will. :P

Oh yeah. What Peppermint Pig said about the ears.

Hey, i recognise phillip maybe you posted him before or you did at pixelation. I love this type of pixel art i find it extreamly inspirering becuase for some reason i am fasinated with drawing heads. Love it... Crits - pep pointed out all i could see wrong for example the bright ears and the slap section of hair. LOL

Thanks

Pool for mobile?  ;)
Good choice for avatar style.

Because of sizes of the head, Daniel avatar falls out of the general style. But it however best from other avatar.
Excuse me for my bad English! :/

the size is to make him stand out, since Daniel is going to be a sort of "boss". he's got +5 in the stats.

I agree with the darkening of the ears and the hair. I'll change that

thanks for the critis!

I'm not sure if you put up the piece for general crit, but the rounded edges of the chart bars makes it difficult to read the measurements.  I know, I know it's not very slick to have plain old flat edged bars. It just looks funky as it is.

yeah the rectangular... are pretty boring. but the round makes is confusing. agree. maybe only the corners should be rounded.
that's way I'm using color to help.

that is a simple problem, just make sure they have the botton edge, you can use a triangle, an arc...anything, doesnt have to be necesarily square to be clear

For me the chart bars are OK, the colors help a lot.

The guy is quite impressive !

i think not using selout and just using the solid colors as a border would help you out a little and make some things look a little cleaner

Haha, love the old man. So weary and full of character. Reminds me a little of the sorta' stuff Ken Fejer does. Wish I could draw faces like that.

hey every one. I picked up the critics on the Daniel Portrait, and updated it. thanks everyone that tiped!

here it is:

and a stripe with the progress

Original concept - line art - inicial blocking out - detailing.
this is pretty much how I work when it comes to pixel illustration.

and I also made this new portrait of another player. Carl, the tecnical player!!!

take care, and please, be so participative as with daniel!

gahaha I think they both are awesome. Love Carl...seems like the perfect geeky type. Maybe you can give him a D&D dice as a lucky charm or something :p

one more thing for Daniel, I know the style is just so it fits with your older portraits, but I just cant stand the highlight on his baldspot. it looks too big to be a specular, but it's too harshly contrasted to just be an extra skintone, so...you should either put a blending shade in there somewhere, OR make it an obvious specular ( one of the WIP versions makes it look more like a specular), maybe by giving it that typical window shape that identifies speculars? anyway, you should be able to figure it out :p I'm just throwing out ideas.

and MAN, that sketch looks even MORE like dr Wily XD. I insist you give Daniel a Wily-ish eyebrow wiggling emote :p

To be fair, poor little Marco didnt even know who Wily was before some mad megaman fanboy (read me :p) screamed and whined all over the place for a Dr.Wily reference :p

I think this is just good characterization, I think all of the characters are very striking and memorable, they all strike a chord in me and I'm sure I'd remember them if I played them in a game

wonderful, but I swear with a light touch of anti-aliasing it would look worlds better, but do not soften the wrinkles too much

heres the final version of daniel.

I didn't want to make him dr Wily, because I dont really know what dc wily looks like specifically, plus I dont want him do be the Bad Guy.

I did put this "Winner" badge on him. fans of megaman may look at it as "w" for Wily. so...
I fixed his eyes, now he is looking at us, and added the reflection on his forhead. :D

take care every one. hope you like this.

Pretty shiny forehead :D Looks like it was made of glass and it reflects the window, are you sure you want that? ??? Eyes are better now.

Ter-o....read the topic =) that is a suggestion I made to make the highlight look like an obviously bright highlight AKA specular because the tone clashed with the others too much, so I thought, if it's gonna clash recognize it clashes and make it obvious.

and he went with it =O I didnt expect that at all.

lol...this is great The "W" brooch (ooops heheh) is a perfect compromise, heh you went with everything I said :p  now  I almost feel guilty for telling you what do do XD

BTW, will these be animated or not? you told me something about an emote for Louis where he went kinda nuts...will that be in lower res or with these same portraits...or what?

I like how he looks  at you now...the little cig tho, that is completly getting lost in his moustache, use the lighting to make it stick out and emphasize foreshortening (somewhat like the forearm in the guitar topic) otherwise it will just seem like an oddly white strand of mustache :p
