Farm Field scene mockup - Please help

on: April 27, 2017, 09:05:42 pm

Please help me improve this scene.
I'm trying to make a farm field level and I just threw this together to get some visualisation, but I'm not sure where to add detail and if the colors are working well.

Everything kinda gets lost here since the saturation is so wonky. Go over the characters again, try to make them pop out a bit more compared to the background.
Use the grasshopper as a litmus, it should AT LEAST be as visible as he is!
I'd also go back over the mouse character, he looks a lot less refined a drawing than the others.

Reworking the Playable mouse character too.

Thanks for the pointy but good advise. I'm now taking a step back and looking how the colors and elements will work together. Here is a wip. Before I transfer the concept into pixels.

Is this better for colors and saturation?

Close, but now the background is too saturated! Try to keep with that bright on dark look from the first screenshot or, if situation demands brighter colors, try for complementary palletes or more muted colors so characters don't get lost! Remember, visibility is KEY. Low visibility is one of the biggest causes of "oh, BULL shit!" enemy encounters, nix it wherever it's possible to do so without ruining the visuals!

And if that proves difficult, consider outlines. Makes things chunkier but way more clear on a variety of backgrounds!

(also, I really dug the sense of scale in the first one from the dark lighting. Good stuff!)

Do you think this mouse design is better? How could I improve it? I want to keep it fairly simple for animation purposes, but not look overly simple.

I'm still working on the background... Next post.

I know it's been a while. After many iterations this is where I have got, what are your thoughts, I was thinking the sky needs some clouds and maybe more grass in the front. I'm also not sure how to add more reference to the farm aspect. Potentially the ground needs some green grass elements.

I really loved the hay bail. I hope you're still planning to use that. The really tall elements like the bail, fence and stalks in the background gave a really lovely sense of scale and low angle perspective. I don't get the sense in the newest mock-up that I am INSIDE the field like I did with the original.

Definitely look into doing something with the sky. You could put a farmhouse and such in the farthest layer. Some trees back there would also be nice, just right in the distance, at the moment it's a little too flat.

The pixel ling overall is looking very tight, love the way you've done the grass and especially the stalks in the foreground. I think overall my advice would just be add more things. More variety. Non dirt elements in the playable area would be very nice. Stones, twigs (or I guess grass stalks since we're in a large field) parts from old farm equipment/structures etc.

I'm a lover of saturation myself but I do think you could tone it down a bit for the darker colours. A bit into the eye-bleed range at the moment.
