Looking for help with Leaves (sidescroller trees)

on: March 07, 2017, 12:02:49 am

I've seen various posts about tree's in the past, done tutorials etc. but for some reason I can never get the hang of leafs and foliage, the angle is right, the trunk looks fine to me and the style I'm going for.. But I've tried the leafs twice now as you can see, and it really looks sloppy... Help?  ???

Looks fine to me. Maybe try more shape variety so it's not as blobby, and perhaps think about how they'd cluster around the branches more?

I'd say you don't have enough dark shades in the leaves, except for near the branches. As a result, your leaves look almost like a sphere, or like a very smooth object, because the gradient is smooth and you use light colors. That's why it looks blobby I believe. I would try to make the structure more erratic with more shades to give the feel of a non round shape, like in real trees.

In that sense, the left drawing is an improvement of the right one.

Hope it could somehow help you :)

Thanks for the feedback guys, I've noted everything spoken of above and applied it, here's the result now:

I've gone and added more darks in the bottom, and fleshed out more shape to the bushes in the trees' branches. I guess the only thing still bothering me is, how to apply the light source correctly at this point.

You're still treating it as one object rather than several clusters!
Think of them in terms of a series of orbs instead, like the cluster towards the camera should have some highlights and shadows too.
Also, if you want to get REALLY fancy, remember that leaves are slightly translucent and let a bit of light through to leaves directly under them!
