Game boy background.

on: October 01, 2016, 09:04:36 am
I made this background with a mountain and a tower for the first day of Octobit:

I want to put some leaves or something in the foreground, but i am out of space and colors. Any tips?

Here, a few ideas. Remember, one of the colors isn't a real color but a transparency! Try to keep that in mind when drawing!

I didn't really understand what you meant about transparency. Can i use one more colour that is transparent?

I changed the palette a bit, how about now?

Unfortunately, it's not! To explain, the highlights on the leaves make no sense for leaves and instead make the foreground objects look like rough gravel or coffee beans rather than foliage. Leaves are slightly translucent in most cases and tend to diffuse light a bit, as seen here:

This means that, stylistically, leaves don't really adhere to more than very minimal or overlap shading when rendered cartoonishly like in the style you seem to be shooting for here. They're designed by nature to absorb light, after all!
They also don't have edge lighting like that, and as a result what you've drawn looks far more round than most leaves are!
