Listen, we've all been there. You’re wandering through a peaceful field in Hyrule, picking a few Silent Princesses, when that terrifying, high-pitched cello music starts. The Surface: Where the Wild Things Are

There are 15 Lynels patrolling the surface of Hyrule. Most of them are the "lower" tiers—Red and Blue—but if you’ve been playing for a while and your hidden XP level is high enough, some of these will scale up to White-Maned or even Silver.

If you're hunting for specific colors to upgrade your Barbarian Armor, you’ll want to hit these specific spots.

Red-Maned Lynels (The "Easy" Ones)

• West Hyrule Plains: Just southwest of the New Serenne Stable. This guy is a classic. Great for a warm-up.

• Tanagar Canyon: Northwest of Lindor’s Brow Skyview Tower. Look near where the Hinox hangs out.

Blue-Maned Lynels

• Lanayru Heights: This one is a favorite for farming. He’s northwest of the O-ogim Shrine.
• Stalry Plateau: North of the Kitawak Shrine in the Faron region.
• Hebra West Summit: Way out on the western edge of the world. It’s cold, it’s lonely, and he’s mean.

White-Maned and Silver (The Heavy Hitters)

• Kamah Plateau: South of Lake Floria. Usually a White-Maned.
• Risoka Snowfield: South of the Otutsum Shrine in the Gerudo Highlands. This one is often White-Maned but can scale to Silver.
• Rabia Plain: East of Kakariko Village. This is one of the few places on the surface where a Silver Lynel naturally spawns once you've progressed enough.

The Depths: Armor and Gloom

The Depths are where things get real. There are 19 Lynels down here, and almost all of them are "Armored." You can’t even hurt them until you break that stone shell with a blunt weapon or a bomb. Basically, don't show up without a few Lynel Hooves or a Biggoron's Sword fused to a boulder.

A weirdly helpful tip: there is almost always a Lynel in the Depths directly underneath every Stable on the surface. If you’re looking at your map and see a Stable, mark the spot, dive into the nearest Chasm, and prepare for a fight.

The Floating Coliseum: The Ultimate Gauntlet

4. Silver Lynel.

Get a Royal Guard's Claymore, break it until it's on its last hit, and fuse a Silver Lynel Horn to it. When you mount a Lynel, weapon durability doesn't count. You can basically delete a Silver Lynel in one mount if your timing is right.

Why Your Map Might Look Different

Ever gone to a "guaranteed" Silver Lynel spot only to find a puny Red one? It's not a bug. Tears of the Kingdom uses a hidden leveling system. As you kill more enemies—not just Lynels, but bosses and high-tier mobs—the world "levels up."

Eventually, those Red-Maned guys will be replaced by Silver ones. If you're desperate for Silver materials but the world is still "weak," your only guaranteed bet is the final two stages of the Floating Coliseum or specific fixed spawns in the Depths, like the one near the Mu-ustust Lightroot.

Pro Tips for the Hunt

Don't just run in swinging. That's a great way to see the Game Over screen.

• Puffshrooms are broken: Throw a Puffshroom at a Lynel's feet. He'll get confused, lose sight of you, and just stand there. You can walk right up and mount him. It feels like cheating, but hey, he’s a 10-foot tall murder beast.
• Rocket Shields: Fusing a Zonai Rocket to your shield lets you get instant airtime. This triggers "bullet time" with your bow. Land a headshot, stun him, and hop on his back.
• The Master Sword: It glows when you're around Gloom-infested Lynels in the Depths, which means it gets a massive durability and damage boost.

Moving Toward the Master Hunt

If you're serious about farming these guys, start by marking the surface locations first. They are easier to get to and don't involve dealing with Gloom damage. Once you've geared up with some Barbarian Armor (found in the Lomei Labyrinths), head down to the Depths.

You’ll want to create a path between the Lightroots that sit near the Lynel spawns. After every Blood Moon, you can just warp from point to point, collecting enough horns to make the rest of the game a total breeze.

Go ahead and drop a travel medallion right outside the Floating Coliseum entrance. It saves a lot of climbing, and it's the fastest way to restock your inventory after the moon turns red.
