The Shard of Alexander is basically the holy grail for anyone playing Elden Ring who doesn't want to spend twenty minutes chipping away at a boss's health bar. It's not just a "good" item. It is a build-defining, game-changing chunk of jar-flesh that boosts your Skill damage by a staggering 15%. That might not sound like a world-shattering number on paper, but when you realize it stacks with things like the Godfrey Icon or specific Flask of Wondrous Physick tears, you're suddenly looking at one-shotting things that used to give you nightmares.
You want it. You need it. But getting it is a bit of a tragedy.
Most players stumble into Iron Fist Alexander early on in Limgrave, see a giant jar stuck in the dirt, and think, "Oh, what a quirky guy." Little do they know that obtaining the Shard of Alexander requires following one of the longest, most emotionally taxing questlines in the entire Lands Between. You can't just find it in a chest. You can't buy it from a merchant. You have to earn it through blood, sweat, and a very awkward lava bath.
The Long Road to Farum Azula
Getting the Shard of Alexander isn't something you do in an afternoon. It’s a commitment. Honestly, if you're looking for a shortcut, the only one is killing him early, but don't do that. If you kill Alexander the first time you see him in Limgrave or at Redmane Castle, he’ll only drop the Warrior Jar Shard. That’s the "budget" version. It only gives you a 10% boost. It’s a trap. You’ll be stuck with an inferior talisman for the rest of your playthrough just because you were impatient. Don't be that person.
The journey starts in Northern Limgrave. You’ll hear a booming voice calling for help near the Saintsbridge Site of Grace.
Alexander is stuck. Again. You need to smack him from behind with a heavy attack to pop him out of the ground. It’s a goofy introduction for a character who ends up having one of the most somber endings in the game. After this, he heads to Gael Tunnel on the border of Caelid. You don't strictly have to meet him there, but it’s good for the lore. He’s standing behind a locked door near the boss room, looking for a way into the Radahn Festival.
The Festival of Blood
The next time you’ll see him is at Redmane Castle. This is the big one. You have to fight Starscourge Radahn. Alexander is a summonable NPC for this fight, and frankly, he’s one of the few who actually holds his own against the gravity-slinging general. Once Radahn is a memory and the stars start falling, you’ll find Alexander sitting on the beach, literally scooping the remains of dead warriors into his jar-body to "strengthen" himself. It’s gross. It’s also peak Elden Ring.
Talk to him until he repeats himself. This is the golden rule of FromSoftware quests: if they aren't repeating themselves, you aren't done.
Liurnia, Lava, and the Fire Giant
After the beach party, Alexander gets stuck again. This time he’s in Liurnia of the Lakes, just south of the Carian Study Hall. But there’s a catch. Smacking him won't work this time; he’s too stuck. You need Oil Pots. If you don't have the recipe, you have to find the Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [17] sold by the merchant in Siofra River. Throw an oil pot at him, give him a good thwack, and he’s free.
He tells you he’s heading north to get stronger. He means the volcano.
Go to Seethewater Terminus in Mt. Gelmir. Past the Magma Wyrm boss, you’ll find Alexander standing in a lake of literal lava. He’s "tempering" himself. He’ll give you the Jar helmet here, which is a fashion statement if I’ve ever seen one. This is a crucial step for the Shard of Alexander quest because it sets up his final realization: he needs to be even hotter, even stronger.
The Mountaintops of the Giants
He shows up one last time as a summon for the Fire Giant. You don't have to summon him, but why wouldn't you? He’s a tank. Once the giant is dead and the Forge is lit, the final stage of the quest triggers. You have to make your way to Crumbling Farum Azula. This is a late-game area, so if you’re still in the mid-game, just tuck this info away for later.
The Final Duel for the Shard of Alexander
In Crumbling Farum Azula, near the Dragon Temple Lift Site of Grace, you’ll find him. He’s standing on a floating platform, looking out at the wreckage of the world. He’s been waiting for you.
He knows he’s reached his limit. He knows that as a warrior jar, his final destiny is to break against someone stronger so his contents can be passed on. It’s a duel to the death. There’s no way around it.

Strategy for the Final Fight
Alexander isn't a pushover here. He uses a variant of the "Shards of Alexander" move—a spinning whirlwind attack that can catch you off guard and delete your health bar.
- Don't get greedy. He has high poise.
- Wait for the spin. After he finishes his whirlwind attack, he’s vulnerable for a few seconds.
- Use range if you're scared. If you're a mage, Comet Azur or Night Comet makes this trivial, but it feels a bit disrespectful to the big guy.
When you defeat him, he cracks. He gives you his final words, expressing pride in being bested by a champion like you. And then he explodes. In the wreckage, you’ll find Alexander's Innards (a key item for a different quest in the DLC) and, finally, the Shard of Alexander.
Why This Talisman Breaks the Game
You might be wondering if all that running around is actually worth it. It is. Let's look at why the Shard of Alexander is basically permanent equipment for most players.
Most of the "meta" weapons in Elden Ring rely heavily on their Ash of War. Think about the Rivers of Blood (even after the nerfs), the Blasphemous Blade, or the Moonveil. The "Taker's Flames" skill on the Blasphemous Blade already heals you and deals massive fire damage. Add a 15% flat buff to that damage, and you're suddenly out-trading endgame bosses.
If you're using the Bolt of Gransax, the Shard of Alexander turns your sniper shots into literal nuclear strikes. It’s the difference between leaving a Crucible Knight with a sliver of health and sending him straight to the loading screen.

Synergies to Watch Out For
If you want to maximize this, pair it with the Carian Filigreed Crest. That lowers the FP cost of your skills. Now you’re hitting 15% harder and doing it more often. If you’re a strength build using something like the Ruins Greatsword, combine this shard with the Godfrey Icon (which boosts charged skills). The math starts getting ridiculous. We’re talking about thousands of damage in a single hit.
Common Mistakes and Quest Breaks
People mess this quest up all the time. The most common "fail state" is simply forgetting to talk to him at one of his locations.
If you go to Farum Azula and he isn't there, check the lava lake in Mt. Gelmir. If he isn't there, check the beach in Cradahn. Usually, he’s just waiting for a conversation. Also, keep in mind that if you progress too far into the end-game without doing his Liurnia step, he might skip directly to the Mountaintops, but it's buggy. Just do the steps. It’s safer.
Another weird thing: if you've already cleared Farum Azula and killed the final boss of the area (Maliketh), you can still finish Alexander’s quest. He doesn’t disappear. He’s patient. He’ll wait for that duel until the end of time.
What to Do Next
Once you have the Shard of Alexander, your next move depends on your build.
If you're running a Dexterity/Arcane build, go grab the Lord of Blood's Exultation. If you're a pure Strength user, look for the Claw Talisman. The goal is to stack as many multiplicative buffs as possible.
You should also head back to Jarburg in Liurnia. If you have the "Alexander's Innards" item you picked up after the fight, you can give them to Jar-Bairn. It’s a nice way to wrap up the narrative and gives you yet another talisman (the Companion Jar), which boosts the damage of throwables. It doesn't quite have the raw power of the Shard, but it’s a fitting end to the story of the bravest jar in the Lands Between.
Go find a boss. Press your L2 (or Skill button). Watch the health bar melt. You've earned it.
