The robe top provides a +3 Magic attack bonus. That’s it. It has zero defensive stats across the board—no help against stab, slash, crush, or even magic itself. If a Hill Giant breathes on you while you're wearing this, you’re going to feel it.
But here’s the thing: in Old School RuneScape, especially in Free-to-Play (F2P), every point of accuracy counts when you’re level 15 and trying to land a Fire Strike on a moss giant. The full set (hat and top) gives you a +5 bonus. It’s not much, but it’s better than wearing nothing, which is basically your only other option unless you want to spend the gold on Zamorak robes.

Don't buy these for 5k from some guy in the GE. Seriously.

If you have a few coins, just go to the Varrock Clothes Shop. Zaff doesn't sell them—he’s the staff guy—but Thessalia’s Fine Clothes in the center of Varrock has them in stock. They usually cost about 50 to 100 gold pieces.

Ways to get the robe:
- Wizards (Level 9): Found in the Wizards' Tower or south of Varrock.
- Thessalia’s Fine Clothes: Located in Varrock square.
- The Grand Exchange: Usually costs around 1,500 gold as of early 2026.
- Imps: They drop weird stuff, and the robe top is on their table.
The weird "skirt" situation
One thing that always trips up new players is the "set" logic. There is no such thing as a "blue wizard robe bottom" in the way you’d expect.
Wizards wear a Blue skirt. It’s just a regular blue skirt. It provides zero magic bonuses. Zero. People wear it because it matches the blue wizard robe top, and let’s be real, fashionscape is 50% of the game. If you want actual stats for your leg slot in F2P, you have to get the Zamorak monk bottoms, which actually give a +2 Magic bonus.

Is the trimmed version worth it?
You’ll occasionally see players running around in a version with gold or blue ruffles. These are the Blue wizard robe (t) and Blue wizard robe (g).
Are they better? No. They have the exact same stats as the standard blue wizard robe. They are purely for showing off that you either did a lot of Easy Clue Scrolls or you have a few hundred thousand gold to burn on a low-level account.

Back in the day, scammers used to tell people they could "trim" their robes for them. They can't. If someone asks for your robe to trim it, they are going to walk away with your 1,000 gold item and you'll be standing there in your underwear. Don't be that guy.
Why it actually matters in 2026
With all the new updates and the shifting meta, you might think the blue wizard robe is obsolete.
It sort of is for high-level players, but for the F2P community, it’s the gold standard. When you’re starting out, your magic accuracy is terrible. Missing a spell is a waste of runes, and runes are expensive when you’re broke. That +3 from the top might be the difference between a "splash" and the killing blow on Delrith during the Demon Slayer quest.
Also, it’s iconic. It’s the look of the "noob," but in a nostalgic, endearing way. We’ve all been there.
Moving on to better gear
Eventually, you’ll outgrow it. If you’re a member, you’ll jump into Xerician robes at level 20 Magic, which are crafted from salad robes (as the community calls them). Then you’ve got Mystic at level 40.
But for those first few hours of gameplay? The blue wizard robe is your best friend. It’s cheap, it looks the part, and it gets the job done.
If you're currently wearing one and looking for the next step, start saving up for an Amulet of Magic. It gives a +10 bonus, which is more than the robe and hat combined. Pair that with your blue wizard robe OSRS setup, and you’ll actually start hitting things consistently.
