If you just logged in and realized your rank is gone, you're not alone. It happens every time. Honestly, the timing for Riot's updates can be a total headache depending on where you live. For most of us, the current competitive cycle, officially known as Season 2026 Act 1, kicked off on January 7, 2026.
That was the big day. Patch 12.00 dropped, the servers went into their usual panic mode for a few hours, and then we were all back in the grind. If you’re in Europe or Asia, you probably saw the update land early on January 8 due to the time zone offset.

It’s been a wild start. This isn't just another "new skins, new battle pass" situation. Riot has been leaning into this newer structure they started back in 2025, moving away from the old "Episode" naming convention and just calling it the 2026 Season.
When did this valorant season start and why does it feel different?
The rollout officially began on January 7. But "starting" a season isn't just about a calendar date. It’s about the massive shift in the meta that usually follows. This time around, we got a new sidearm called the Bandit. It’s 600 credits and basically rewards people who can actually click heads, unlike my frantic spraying with a Frenzy.
Aside from the gun, the map pool got a facelift. They finally brought Breeze back, but thank goodness they reworked it. No more infinite halls to get lurked in. They also tweaked Haven and Sunset, mostly fixing visibility issues. If you felt like you were getting shot by ghosts in dark corners, that was probably why.
The specifics of the launch
- Americas: Servers went down around 6:00 AM PT on January 7.
- EMEA: Maintenance started later that night, with the game playable on January 8.
- Asia-Pacific: Similar to EMEA, the actual "start" was January 8 local time.
Riot Global Community Manager Kenny “Karnifexlol“ Cameron basically confirmed in the patch notes that this season is meant to be "foundational." They aren't throwing a brand new Agent at us yet—we just got Veto back in late 2025—but the balance changes to Breach and Sage are definitely shaking up how we play the early rounds.
What changed the moment the season went live?
The second you finished that update download, the game looked a bit different. They refreshed the UI. The lobby looks cleaner, and the social panel doesn't feel like it’s from 2010 anymore.

But the real kicker? The Replay System.
Yeah, it’s finally here. Well, sort of. It’s currently in Custom Matches. It’s a huge step forward even if it's not in ranked yet. Being able to go back and see exactly how that Jett dashed through your smoke and didn't die is actually possible now.
"The 2026 season release date marked a new commitment to the core competitive experience," according to reports from Esports Insider.

Basically, they are trying to fix the game's "culture" as much as the code.
A quick look at the 2026 roadmap
- Act 1 Start: January 7, 2026
- Act 1 End: Expected around March 17, 2026
- Rank Reset: Full reset for the new year.
If you’re wondering about your rank, you had to do five placement matches again. Since it's the start of a new Year/Season, the reset was "harder" than the small resets we get between Acts. You likely placed a full tier lower than where you ended in 2025. Don't stress it; the MMR is still there, you just have to prove you haven't gotten rusty over the holidays.
Is the meta actually better now?
It's hard to say after only a week or so. Sage's healing is faster now, which is kinda annoying when you’re trying to chip away at a team, but it makes her feel relevant again. Harbor also got some love with his wall durations. Honestly, the most impactful change is the Bandit pistol.
People are treating it like a mini-Guardian. If you’re a cracked Aim Lab god, you’re going to love it. If you’re like me and rely on utility to win fights, you're going to hate being tapped by a 600-credit gun during a save round.
The battle pass is also surprisingly decent this time. Usually, the skins are "meh," but the Tier 50 melee is actually something you might want to equip. Plus, the "Alpha vs Omega" event tie-in gives the whole season a bit more story flavor than we usually get.
What you should do right now
Stop complaining about your placement rank and start learning the Breeze reworks. The "Hall" is gone. The mid-fights are simpler. If you haven't played since December, you're going to get caught out by the new geometry.
Also, check out the "All Random, One Site" limited-time mode if you're feeling burnt out on ranked. It’s chaotic 5v5 where everyone gets a random agent. It's the best way to warm up your hands before a competitive match without the stress of a 40-minute commitment.
Get your placements done before the end of January to ensure you’re settled in before the first major balance patch hits in February. The grind is long, and you've got until mid-March to hit your peak for this Act.
