Waiver Wire Week 8: Why You’re Probably Looking at the Wrong Players

Waiver Wire Week 8: Why You’re Probably Looking at the Wrong Players

Panic is a hell of a drug in fantasy football. By the time Sunday night rolls around, you’re staring at a roster full of red "O" tags and wondering how everything fell apart so fast. Honestly, this late October stretch is where seasons go to die—or where they get saved. The waiver wire week 8 landscape isn't just about grabbing the guy who happened to score a touchdown on a random 40-yard screen pass yesterday. It’s about volume, opportunity, and the cold, hard reality of the medical tent.

Week 7 was a absolute bloodbath. We saw Mike Evans go down with a broken clavicle that basically ends his 2025 fantasy utility. Jayden Daniels grabbed his hamstring in Dallas, leaving the Commanders' high-flying offense in the hands of Marcus Mariota. Then there’s the Nico Collins concussion saga and the sudden ankle injury to Bryce Young. If your team isn't hurting, you’re either incredibly lucky or you aren't playing in a very competitive league.

If you haven't grabbed Jaxson Dart yet, what are you even doing? I'm serious. The Giants rookie is currently rostered in about 48% of leagues, which is frankly insulting given he's averaging nearly 22 fantasy points per start. He just shredded a top-tier Broncos defense for a career day. Yeah, the Giants lost that game because their defense couldn't stop a nosebleed, but for fantasy? We love a bad defense that forces the rookie to keep throwing.

Dart gets the Eagles in Week 8. He already torched them once this season. His dual-threat floor makes him a better play than half the "established" veterans you’re probably clinging to out of habit.

Then there’s the Joe Flacco situation. The man is 40 years old and somehow just finished as the QB6 of Week 7. Since moving to Cincinnati, he’s been a different human being. He’s averaging 22.4 points per game and has Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to bail him out of every bad decision. If you're the Jayden Daniels manager and you need a bridge while that hamstring heals, Flacco is your guy. He faces a Jets defense that is starting to crack under the weight of an 0-7 season.

Wide Receiver Depth: Replacing the Irreplaceable

Losing Mike Evans is a season-defining blow. You aren't going to find 1,000 yards and double-digit touchdowns sitting on the wire. But you can find targets.

Kayshon Boutte has quietly become a favorite of Drake Maye in New England. He’s sitting at 32% rostered and has put up back-to-back weeks of solid production. It’s not flashy, but he’s actually staying on the field and running routes, which is more than you can say for most of the Patriots' depth chart.

Over in Denver, the Marvin Mims vs. Troy Franklin debate is heating up. Mims had the better box score last week, but Franklin is the one winning on the peripherals. He’s second on the team in targets and routes run. With a matchup against a Cowboys secondary that’s giving up fantasy points like they're on clearance, Franklin is the high-upside play.

  • Darnell Mooney (Falcons): Still available in 70% of leagues. He's been incredibly consistent as a WR3/Flex.
  • Josh Downs (Colts): Check your wire. Someone might have dropped him because of the concussion. If he clears protocol, he’s a target monster for Daniel Jones.
  • Tez Johnson (Bucs): With Evans out, someone has to catch the ball in Tampa. Johnson is only 18% rostered.

The Tight End "Godsend"

Tight end has been a wasteland for years, but Oronde Gadsden II might actually be the savior we didn't see coming. The Chargers rookie just put up 164 yards and a touchdown. That’s not a typo. He has the most receiving yards for a tight end in his first five career games in the Super Bowl era.

Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman love their tight ends, and Justin Herbert is clearly looking Gadsden’s way when things break down. He’s currently rostered in only 3% of leagues. If you’re still starting some veteran who gives you three catches for 22 yards every week, stop it. Go get Gadsden.

If you miss out on him, Mason Taylor (Jets) and Noah Fant (Bengals) are the "break glass in case of emergency" options. Fant is seeing a volume boost with Mike Gesicki dealing with a pectoral injury, and he’s actually reliable in PPR formats.

Running Back Lottery Tickets

Running back is thin. Like, "considering starting a fullback" thin. But the waiver wire week 8 period offers a few glimmers of hope.

Kyle Monangai is finally happening in Chicago. He ran for 81 yards and a score last week. D'Andre Swift is still the lead guy, sure, but the Bears are shifting toward a committee that looks a lot like what Ben Johnson used to run in Detroit. Monangai is a priority add, especially as a high-end handcuff who has standalone Flex value in a good matchup against Baltimore.

Also, keep an eye on the Arizona backfield. With their top two options banged up, "Bam" Knight has taken over the lead role. He’s had 12+ touches in consecutive games. It’s not always pretty, but 15 touches for a starting RB is gold this late in the year.

Actionable Strategy for Your Tuesday Claims

Don't just throw darts at the board. Look at your FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget) and be aggressive where it matters.

  1. If you need a TE: Blow 15-20% of your budget on Oronde Gadsden II. The position is too shallow to play nice.
  2. If you’re the Jayden Daniels owner: Marcus Mariota is a fine 1-2 week rental, but Joe Flacco has the higher ceiling for the rest of the month.
  3. The "Stash" Play: Isaiah Davis (Jets). Breece Hall is dealing with an ankle issue and the Jets are a mess. Davis could see a massive workload in November if they decide to shut Hall down or limit him.
  4. Drop Candidates: You can safely move on from Kyler Murray (Bye week + foot injury), Jerry Jeudy, and Michael Mayer. None of these guys are changing your season's trajectory right now.

Check the Wednesday practice reports before finalizing everything. Hamstring injuries like the ones Jayden Daniels and A.J. Brown are dealing with are notorious for setbacks. If you're rostering guys in those offenses, you need the "next man up" already on your bench before the news breaks.
