You’ve probably seen her. Chained to a wall in a damp cellar, looking like she’s had a rough few decades. Sorceress Sellen isn't exactly the most welcoming NPC when you first stumble into the Waypoint Ruins, but if you're running an Intelligence build, she’s basically your best friend. Or your worst nightmare. Honestly, it depends on how much you value your soul—and your face not being turned into a giant stone ball.
The sellen quest elden ring fans obsess over is notorious. It's long. It's vague. It involves jumping across invisible floors and finding old men hidden in holes in the ground. But the rewards? They're some of the best in the game. We’re talking about the Comet Azur, the spell that basically lets you fire a blue laser of death at bosses until they melt.
Starting the Mess: Waypoint Ruins
First thing's first. You have to find her. She’s under the Waypoint Ruins in Limgrave. You’ll have to smack a Mad Pumpkin Head around a bit before the door opens. Once you’re in, she asks if you want to be her apprentice. Say yes. Don’t overthink it. Even if you aren't a mage, saying yes opens up the shop.

The quest doesn't actually "start" start until you reach Mt. Gelmir. You’re looking for a guy named Primeval Sorcerer Azur. He’s sitting north of the Hermit Village, past a Demi-Human Queen who is remarkably cranky. He doesn't say a word. He just gives you a spell and sits there. Typical. Take that spell back to Sellen in Limgrave. This is the trigger. She’ll realize you’ve seen the "primeval current" and start trusting you with her life’s work.
Finding the Other Old Man
Sellen will give you a "Sellian Sealbreaker" and tell you to find Master Lusat. He’s hidden in the Sellia Hideaway in Caelid. This place is a nightmare to find. Go to the graveyard north of the Church of the Plague and start hitting walls. One of them is fake.
Inside, you’ve got to navigate some giant purple crystals. It’s easy to fall. If you see a crystal snail, you’re on the right track. At the bottom, behind a blue magical barrier, is Lusat. Much like Azur, he’s not a big talker. He gives you Stars of Ruin. It’s a great spell for PVP because the projectiles track like heat-seeking missiles.
The Body Swap
Here is where people usually get stuck. You need to defeat Starscourge Radahn. Once he’s dead and the stars are moving again, go back to Sellen. She tells you her physical body is actually in the Witchbane Ruins in the Weeping Peninsula.
Go there, and you’ll find her shackled. She gives you her "Primal Glintstone." Basically, you’re carrying her soul in a rock. Now, you need to find her a new "suit." Head to the Three Sisters area in Liurnia (where Ranni lives). Between Renna’s Rise and Ranni’s Rise, there are some ruins with an illusory floor. Smash it. Go down, find another fake wall on the left, and you’ll see a Sellen puppet. Pop the rock in, and she’s back.

The Big Choice: Sellen or Jerren?
After you move Sellen into her new body, you need to talk to Witch-Hunter Jerren. You probably remember him as the guy shouting at the Radahn festival. He’ll show up at Witchbane Ruins, standing over Sellen's old corpse. He’s convinced she’s a monster. To be fair, she kinda is.
Now, head to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library (where you fought Rennala). Outside the door, you’ll see two summon signs.
- Gold Sign: Help Sellen kill Jerren.
- Red Sign: Help Jerren kill Sellen.
Why you should choose Sellen: Honestly, the loot is better. You get Jerren’s armor (the Eccentric Set), the Glintstone Kris dagger, and a new spell called Shard Spiral. Plus, you can go back to Azur and Lusat’s locations to pick up their legendary armor sets. If you kill Sellen, those sets are gone for that playthrough.
Why you should choose Jerren: You get an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. That’s it. It’s a rare material for maxing out weapons, but you can find others. Most people side with Sellen just for the fashion.
The Graven-Mass Problem
If you side with Sellen, things look great for a minute. She stands in the middle of the room, tells you she's taking over the Academy, and basically promises to be your loyal ally when you become Elden Lord. It’s a rare "happy" moment in a FromSoftware game.
Then you rest at a Site of Grace.
When you come back, Rennala is back in the center of the room like nothing happened. Sellen? She’s been shoved into a corner. And she’s not a human anymore. She’s a "School of Graven Mages"—a giant, groaning ball of stone heads. She can still sell you spells, but she’s clearly in a lot of pain. It’s a grim reminder that in the Lands Between, "restoring the primeval current" usually ends in a body-horror nightmare.
Troubleshooting the Quest
A lot of players complain the quest is "bugged" when Jerren doesn't show up. Usually, it's just a sequence error. Make sure you’ve exhausted Jerren’s dialogue at Redmane Castle after Radahn is dead. If he’s still sitting in the chair at the back of the castle, he won't move to the ruins.
Also, if you accidentally hit Sellen while she's chained up (it happens, those bats are annoying), you need to go to the Church of Vows and use a Celestial Dew. This "resets" her aggression so you can finish the quest.
What to do next
If you just finished the quest and Sellen is now a ball, don't forget to fast-travel back to the Seethewater Terminus (Mt. Gelmir) and the Sellia Hideaway (Caelid). The bodies of Azur and Lusat will have dropped their armor sets. These are some of the most iconic mage outfits in the game, and if you leave them there, you’re leaving some serious "drip" on the table. After that, take your new Glintstone Kris to a blacksmith—that thing’s weapon art scales like crazy with Intelligence.
