You probably think Steve Jobs invented the window. Or maybe you're a die-hard Bill Gates fan who swears Microsoft paved the way for the modern desktop. Honestly? They were both late to the party. Jobs walked in, saw the Alto running Smalltalk, and lost his mind.
He famously said he was blinded by the GUI and didn't even notice the other two massive inventions they showed him: object-oriented programming and Ethernet networking. He went back to Apple and pivoted the development of the Apple Lisa and the Macintosh to be fully graphical. The Lisa was powerful but failed because it cost $10,000. It was too much for the average person. But it set the stage for the 1984 Macintosh.
