Sun Kissed Bones OSRS Explained: Why You Should Stop Ignoring Them

You're running through Varlamore, maybe finishing up a Hunter Rumor or just getting back from a session at the Doom of Mokhaiotl. You check your loot sack or the boss chest, and there they are. Sun kissed bones. At first glance, they look like just another untradeable skilling item destined to rot in your bank. Honestly? Most players just let them sit there because they don't immediately see a "Bury" option that makes sense.

But if you’re an Ironman or just someone looking to save a few million GP on the way to 99 Prayer, these things are basically gold.

They aren't just "bones." They're a specific currency for the Libation Pool system in the Teomat. If you’ve been sleeping on them, you’re essentially throwing away some of the lowest-effort Prayer experience in Old School RuneScape. Let's get into why these matter and how you actually use them without wasting your time.

What Are Sun Kissed Bones OSRS Exactly?

Basically, sun kissed bones are a unique, untradeable drop found exclusively within the Varlamore region. Unlike Dragon bones or Wyvern bones, you don’t just take these to a Gilded Altar or the Chaos Altar in the Wilderness. If you try to bury them, you’ll get a measly 4.5 XP—the same as a regular bone.

That is a trap. Don't do it.

The real value of these bones lies in their conversion. You use a chisel on them to break them down into Blessed Bone Shards. Specifically, one sun kissed bone yields 45 shards. When you consider that a regular dragon bone only gives 36 shards when blessed, you start to see why these are actually top-tier for Prayer training.

Where Do They Come From?

You can't just go out and kill a "Sun-Kissed Dragon." Instead, you’ll find them as rewards from:

  • The Doom of Mokhaiotl: This boss is a huge source. You can walk away from a few KC with hundreds of these bones.
  • Hunters' Rumours: If you’re grinding out the Quetzal whistle or just want some pet chances, the loot sacks from expert and master rumors are packed with them.
  • Perilous Moons: While not the primary drop, they do show up in the reward pool.

The drop rates are generous enough that if you're doing Varlamore content, you’ll likely end up with thousands of them before you even realize it.

The Math: Why They Beat Traditional Training

Let's talk numbers. I know, math is boring, but in OSRS, it’s the difference between a 100-hour grind and a 40-hour one.

When you take your Blessed Bone Shards to the Libation Pool at the Teomat, the XP you get depends on the wine you use. If you use regular Jugs of Wine, each shard is 5 XP. If you use Sunfire Wine (made by adding Sunfire Splinters to wine), that jumps to 6 XP per shard.

Since one sun kissed bone gives 45 shards:

  • With regular wine: 225 XP per bone.
  • With Sunfire wine: 270 XP per bone.

For comparison, a Dragon bone at a Gilded Altar with two burners lit gives 252 XP. So, sun kissed bones are actually better than Dragon bones if you’re using Sunfire wine. And the best part? You don't have to worry about getting PK’ed at the Chaos Altar. It's completely safe.

How to Use Them Efficiently

You've got a stack of bones. Now what? You need a chisel and a bit of patience.

You can just click the chisel and then the bone, but there's a trick to speed it up. If you click the chisel and then double-click the bone, you can often skip the animation lag. Some players even use the "unnote" NPC near the altar in the Teomat to process huge stacks without ever leaving the area.

The Libation Pool Process

  1. Chisel them: Turn those sun kissed bones into shards. They’re stackable, so they won't clog up your inventory anymore.
  2. Get your wine: Go to the Teomat (the temple in the mountains of Varlamore). Bring Jugs of Sunfire Wine if you want the best rates.
  3. Bless the wine: Use the exposed altar right there in the temple to bless your wines.
  4. Offer the shards: Head to the pool just north of the altar. You’ll sacrifice 100 shards at a time.

It is incredibly AFK. You can literally click the pool and watch a YouTube video while your character dumps shards into the water for 500 or 600 XP drops.

What Most People Get Wrong

The biggest misconception is that these are "junk" drops because they have a weirdly high "mapped" value. Jagex originally had these valued at around 8,000 GP in the loot broadcast windows. This led to a lot of confusion where people thought they were getting a massive drop, only to realize they couldn't sell them on the Grand Exchange.

They are untradeable. Period.

If you’re a main account with 99 Prayer, they are admittedly a bit annoying. There’s currently no way to trade them in for something else—though the community has been asking for a way to fletch them into Atlatl dart tips or trade them for Sunfire splinters. Until that happens, they just sit there.

But for everyone else? They represent a massive "hidden" bank of XP. If you’ve done 100 Hunter Rumors, you probably have enough sun kissed bones in your bank right now to jump 5 or 6 Prayer levels.

Actionable Next Steps

Don't let these rot. If you've been grinding Varlamore, take ten minutes to check your bank.

First, grab a chisel and break down every single sun kissed bone you own into shards. Since shards are stackable, you’ll free up bank space immediately. Second, if you’re low on Prayer, head to the Teomat with a few Sunfire splinters and some cheap wine.

The XP gain is fast, safe, and significantly cheaper than buying Dragon bones. Even if you only have a few dozen, that’s a quick 10k or 20k XP you didn't have before.

Go to your bank. Search for "sun." Chisel them. Get that easy XP.
