You’ve finally reached Toluca Prison. It’s dark, damp, and honestly, one of the most oppressive areas in the Silent Hill 2 remake. Just when you think you can navigate the corridors, the game throws a massive, multi-stage obstacle in your path: the Silent Hill 2 remake weight puzzle.
This isn't just one quick brain teaser. It is the literal spine of the prison level. You'll be backtracking to that courtyard scale more times than you'd probably like, but getting the weight combinations right is the only way to unlock the different wings of the facility. If you're stuck staring at a needle that won't budge or you're missing that one elusive weight in the basement, let’s break it down.
Where to Find All the Weights
You can't solve a scale puzzle without things to weigh. James needs to find five additional weights scattered across the prison to finish the final sequence. You start with the Tiny Weight already on the scale.
- Heaviest Weight: This one is hard to miss. It’s sitting right on the altar in the Chapel. You’ll find it early on.
- Medium Weight: Located in the Death Row section (Serpent wing). You have to overload a generator by flipping switches in the Witness Room to open the door to the electric chair. The weight is right there on the chair.
- Heavy Weight: Found in the Showers. You’ll need to navigate the 2F cell blocks, get the Block D key, find a shiv, and eventually crawl through a hole in the shower wall to grab this from a disgusting pipe.
- Light Weight: This is tucked away in the Warden’s Office. You need to use the typewriter and literally type the word "SICK" to pop the drawer open.
- Lightest Weight: The final piece is in the basement (Dove wing). Specifically, it’s in cell F6. You have to find the control room to remotely unlock the cell doors first.
Unlocking the Animal Doors
The scale in the courtyard has symbols on it: a serpent, an ox, a boar, and a dove. To progress, you have to move the needle to point at the specific symbol for the door you want to open next.

The Headless Serpent Door
To get into the first real section, you only need the weights you found at the start. Put the Heaviest Weight on the right scale and the Tiny Weight (the one that was already there) on the left. The needle should hit the serpent. Easy enough.
The Hornless Ox Door
Once you have the Medium Weight from the electric chair, head back. To hit the Ox symbol, place the Medium Weight on the right side. On the left side, put the Heaviest Weight and the Tiny Weight.
The Eyeless Boar Door
After you survive the shower room and grab the Heavy Weight, it’s time for the Boar. This combination is a bit heavier. Put the Heaviest Weight, Heavy Weight, and Medium Weight all on the right scale. Keep the Tiny Weight on the left.

The Wingless Dove Door
The last door leads to the basement. You’ll need the Light Weight from the Warden's office typewriter. To open the Dove door, put the Medium Weight on the right side. Every other weight you have—Heaviest, Heavy, Light, and Tiny—goes on the left.
The Final Balance: Getting the Execution Lever
Once you have all six weights (including the Lightest Weight from the basement cell F6), you can finally finish this. The goal now isn't to hit a symbol, but to balance the scales perfectly so the needle stays dead center.
Here is the exact setup that works:

- Left Scale: Light Weight, Heavy Weight, Lightest Weight.
- Right Scale: Heaviest Weight, Medium Weight, Tiny Weight.
When the scales are balanced, the compartment at the base of the statue opens up. You’ll get the Execution Lever. This is the key item for the gallows puzzle that follows. Honestly, the gallows are more about the riddle than the math, but you can't even start that part without finishing the weights first.
Troubleshooting the Weights
If the needle isn't landing on the symbol, double-check your inventory. It’s very easy to think you picked up a weight when you actually just looked at it. Also, make sure you aren't leaving a weight on the scale from a previous step that shouldn't be there. The UI in the Silent Hill 2 remake is pretty clear, but in the heat of a chase, it's easy to misclick.
One thing people often forget is that the Tiny Weight is a permanent fixture of this puzzle. If you're following a guide and the math isn't adding up, you might be forgetting to account for that smallest piece.
Once you have the lever, your next step is the gallows in the courtyard. You'll have to choose which "sinner" deserves the rope based on the poem provided. Just remember: there is no "correct" moral answer, only a puzzle answer. Grab the lever, head to the back of the statue, and get ready for the Labyrinth.
