Caelid is a nightmare. Honestly, most players see that red sky and immediately want to turn Torrent around and never look back. But if you’re hunting for powerful spells or trying to progress Millicent’s questline, you eventually have to deal with Sellia Town of Sorcery. It’s a weird, ghost-infested ruin that feels like a massive puzzle box designed specifically to make you lose your mind. You walk in, get sniped by an invisible sorcerer, and wonder why the developers hate you.
It's a barrier. Literally.
Huge blue magical seals block the paths leading out of the town toward the Church of the Plague. You can't just ride through. You have to play their game. Most people stumble around the ground level getting pelted by Glintstone Stars, but the trick to Sellia isn't on the streets. It's on the roofs.
The Gimmick of Sellia Town of Sorcery
The town is basically a giant "light the torch" puzzle. There are three stone towers scattered across the rooftops, each holding a brazier. When you light one, a corresponding seal in the town breaks. Simple, right? Except the town is crawling with Sellian sorcerers who turn invisible or teleport the second you look at them.
You’ve probably noticed the sheer number of ghosts. These aren't just for atmosphere. They represent the "Lost Sorcerers" of the town, and they are incredibly aggressive. If you try to fight them all on the ground, you’ll get overwhelmed. The move is to find the roots and ladders. Look for the giant tree roots snaking over the buildings; Torrent can double-jump onto these from several points near the entrance or the side alleys.
Once you’re up there, the game changes. You’re the predator. Well, mostly. You still have to watch out for the occasional ghost hanging out near a chimney.
Where the Braziers Are Hiding
You don't need a map, you just need to look up. The towers are the highest points in the town.

The first tower is usually the one people find by accident near the center. You climb a ladder, light the fire, and see a notification that a seal has broken. The second and third are further back toward the massive gate at the northern end. One is tucked away on the western side, accessible via the rooftops near the "Sellia Under Stair" Site of Grace.
Interestingly, lighting these fires doesn't just open the way to the boss. It also unlocks small rooms scattered around the town containing loot like the Spelldrake Talisman +1 and the Night Comet sorcery. Night Comet is actually one of the best spells in Elden Ring because NPCs can’t "see" it to dodge it. It’s worth the headache of the invisible snipers just for that.
Dealing with the Nox Swordstress and Nox Priest
After you’ve lit all three fires, the big golden fog gate at the north end of town finally becomes interactable. You aren't fighting a dragon or some cosmic horror here. Instead, you're facing a duo: the Nox Swordstress and the Nox Priest.
They are annoying.
The Swordstress uses a whip-sword that has deceptive range. You think you're safe, then she flicks her wrist and catches you from across the room. The Priest is more of a traditional caster but can still whack you if you get close.
Here is the real tip: Don't let them gang up on you. Use the pillars in the arena to break their line of sight. If you have a Spirit Summon—even something basic like the Lone Wolves—use it here to distract one while you burn down the other. The Swordstress usually has less poise, so if you're a melee build, you can stagger her pretty easily. Just don't get greedy. Caelid punishes greed faster than any other zone in the game.

The Loot is Better Than You Think
Why even bother?
Aside from the Night Comet I mentioned earlier, clearing Sellia is the only way to get to the Staff of Loss. If you’re running an "Invisibility" or "Night" sorcery build, this staff is mandatory because it buffs those specific spells by 30%. That is a massive jump in damage.
You also find the Lusat’s Glintstone Staff nearby, though technically it’s tucked away in a chair guarded by a mini-boss behind the town. This staff has the highest Sorcery Scaling in the game but makes your spells cost 50% more FP. It’s a trade-off. It’s for people who want to end fights in three seconds or die trying.
The Connection to Gowry and Millicent
You can't talk about Sellia Town of Sorcery without mentioning the creepy guy in the shack just outside the gates. Gowry. He’s the one who tells you about the secret of the town in the first place. He wants you to find the Unalloyed Gold Needle to save Millicent, who is rotting away in the Church of the Plague just up the hill.
To get to her, you have to clear the seals in Sellia. There is no other way up that cliff unless you do some very sketchy mountain climbing with Torrent that usually ends in a death screen. Completing this questline is widely considered one of the best stories in the game, and it leads to some of the most powerful talismans (like Millicent's Prosthesis) later on.
Surviving the Invisible Snipers
If you're struggling with the invisible enemies, there is a literal "cheat code" item: the Sentry's Torch. You can buy it from a merchant in the Altus Plateau. If you hold it, invisible enemies become visible.

Now, most people haven't been to Altus yet when they hit Sellia. If that's you, you have to rely on audio cues and the faint shimmer they leave behind. Or, honestly, just keep moving. The sorcerers have a rhythm. They fire, they wait, they fire. If you’re sprinting on the rooftops, they will miss 90% of the time.
A Secret You Probably Missed
Behind the town, up the path toward the Church of the Plague, there is a graveyard. If you hit the cliff face behind the largest headstone, it disappears. This is the Sellia Hideaway.
It’s an illusory wall. Inside is a crystal cave filled with some of the most frustrating platforming and three Crystalian bosses at the end. But more importantly, it's where Master Lusat is being held. If you're doing Sellen’s questline, you have to come here. It’s a high-level area, though. If you’re just hitting Sellia for the first time, maybe save the Hideaway for later unless you enjoy being poked to death by crystalline spears.
How to Optimize Your Run
If you want to get in and out of Sellia as fast as possible, follow this sequence.
- Grab the "Sellia Under Stair" Site of Grace.
- Hop on the roots immediately to your right.
- Ride the roofs to the first tower (Southwest).
- Jump across to the middle section for the second tower.
- Head to the far North for the third.
- Drop down, grab the Night Comet from the chest in the center of town.
- Kill the Nox duo.
- Head out the back gate to the Church of the Plague.
This avoids 90% of the ground-level combat. The sorcerers on the ground are mostly there to distract you while the ones on the balconies snip your health bar. By staying high, you negate their advantage.
Practical Steps to Take Now:
- Check your inventory for the Sentry's Torch if you’ve already reached Altus; it makes the town trivial.
- Equip Magic Grease or Magic-Resistant armor (like the Sage set or Lucaria robes) to mitigate the chip damage from the Glintstone Stars.
- Don't ignore the Night Comet spell in the central chest; even if you aren't a mage, it's a top-tier item for later Respecs.
- Visit Gowry's Shack first to trigger the quest dialogue, or the needle won't drop from the Commander O'Neil boss in the nearby swamp.
- Look for the painting "Resurrection" nearby, which leads to another hidden reward in the Liurnia region.
Sellia isn't about raw power; it's about pathfinding. Once you stop treating it like a combat zone and start treating it like a platforming puzzle, the "Town of Sorcery" becomes a lot less intimidating.
