You’re standing in the Three Sisters sub-region of Liurnia, looking up at that massive stone tower, and the door is sealed. It’s annoying. I’ve been there. Most players stumble upon Ranni’s Rise Elden Ring after beating Royal Knight Loretta at Caria Manor, thinking the hard part is over. It isn’t. This tower is the literal gateway to the most complex, reward-heavy questline in the entire game, but it's notorious for being finicky. If the door is blocked by a magical seal, or if Ranni just isn't showing up, you're likely caught in a sequence break that FromSoftware doesn't explicitly explain.
Honestly, the game expects you to just "know" things. That’s why we’re here.
Getting Inside Ranni’s Rise: The Common Blockers
First things first. You can’t just walk into the tower if you haven't cleared the Manor. You have to kill Loretta. Once she’s down, head out the back of the arena. You’ll see three towers: Renna’s Rise, Ranni’s Rise, and Seluvis’s Rise. Ranni is in the middle one. If you get to the door and it says it's "blocked by a seal," it usually means one of two things. Either you’ve started the Radahn Festival prematurely, or you’ve committed a "sin" against an NPC related to Ranni.
Check your map. Is the festival at Redmane Castle active? If the portals are on and the NPCs are gathered in the courtyard, Ranni often goes into a sort of "hibernation" state. She won't talk to you until Radahn is dead. It's a weird quirk of the game's internal flag system.
What if she’s just not there?
If the tower is open but the chair at the top is empty, you might have accidentally hit an NPC like Blaidd or Seluvis. Go to the Church of Vows in Liurnia. Talk to the giant turtle (Miriel, the GOAT). Use a Celestial Dew at the statue to get "Absolution." This resets NPC hostility. It’s a lifesaver. Most people think they've bricked the quest, but usually, a quick bath in some holy dew fixes the whole thing.
Another weird detail: if you've progressed too far in Rogier's questline, he might tell you to go find Ranni. This actually changes some of her initial dialogue. She’ll act a bit colder. She might even tell you to beat it. If she tells you to leave, go back and talk to Rogier at Roundtable Hold. He’ll suggest you "enter her service" as a spy. Go back to her, and the option to serve her will finally appear.
The Inner Workings of the Three Sisters
The area around Ranni’s Rise Elden Ring is basically a mini-hub for three of the weirdest NPCs in the Lands Between. You’ve got Ranni herself (an Empyrean who shed her flesh), Iji the Giant Smith, Blaidd the Half-Wolf, and Preceptor Seluvis.
Seluvis is a jerk. Let's just be real. He lives in the tower to the south and immediately tries to make you an accomplice in his "puppet" hobby. You don't have to like him to finish Ranni's quest, but you do need to visit his tower to move things along. Iji is just down the road at the Road to the Manor Site of Grace. He’s your primary upgrade guy for Somber Smithing Stones, so keep him happy.
When you finally talk to Ranni at the top of her rise, she’ll ask you to serve her. Say yes. There is zero downside to this, even if you want a different ending later. Saying yes unlocks the "hologram" versions of her crew at the bottom of the tower. You must talk to all three of them—Blaidd, Iji, and Seluvis—before the game will let you leave the tower. If you try to fast travel away and find the site of grace is crossed out, it’s because you haven't finished these introductions. Walk down the stairs. Talk to the ghosts. Go back up and talk to Ranni one last time. Now you’re free.
Why Everyone Obsesses Over This Tower
It isn't just about the lore. It’s about the loot. Finishing the quest that starts here gets you the Moonlight Greatsword (Dark Moon Greatsword in this game). It’s been in every Souls game since 1994. It is arguably the best Intelligence weapon in the game.
But there’s more. Behind Ranni’s Rise Elden Ring, you’ll find a Glintstone Dragon named Adula. Don't freak out when it vanishes at 50% health. It didn't glitch. It retreated to the Cathedral of Manus Celes, which you can't access until much later. Killing the wolves in the area and looting the nearby ruins is worth your time, too.
Sequence Breaking and the Radahn Problem
Here is where people get really stuck. If you've already started the quest but can't find Blaidd in the Siofra River, you probably triggered the Radahn Festival. In Elden Ring, the "Stars" are literally held in place by Starscourge Radahn. Since Ranni’s fate is tied to the stars, her quest cannot progress past a certain point until Radahn is a corpse.
If you're looking for the "treasure of Nokron" and can't find it, and Blaidd isn't where he's supposed to be, just go kill the big guy in Caelid. Once the meteor hits the Mistwood, the path to Nokron opens, and Ranni’s quest resumes. The tower serves as your "check-in" point throughout this journey. Every time you do something major—like finding the Fingerslayer Blade—you come back here.
Hidden Mechanics: The "Secret" Second Tower
Later in the quest, Renna’s Rise (the northern tower) will unlock. Most players miss this because they forget to check back after giving Ranni the Fingerslayer Blade. Inside that tower is a portal. That portal takes you to Ainsel River Main, where you find the Miniature Ranni Doll.
Pro tip: Sit at the nearby Site of Grace and "Talk to Miniature Ranni." Do it three times. She won't answer at first. Keep doing it. She’ll eventually get annoyed and start talking, which is the only way to trigger the final stretch of the quest. If you don't talk to the doll, you’ll be wandering the Lake of Rot wondering why nothing is happening.

Actionable Steps to Clear the Rise Today
Stop wandering around Liurnia aimlessly. If you want to master the area around Ranni’s Rise Elden Ring, follow this specific order to ensure you don't break the scripting:
- Clear Caria Manor. Don't stop at the boss; walk all the way out to the Three Sisters area behind the manor.
- Check for the Seal. If the middle tower is blocked, go to the Church of Vows and check for sins. If you're clean, kill Radahn.
- Exhaust all Dialogue. When you meet Ranni, don't just leave. Talk to her, talk to the three ghosts downstairs, then talk to her again. If the fog wall at the entrance won't disappear, you missed a ghost.
- Find Blaidd in Siofra. He’s near the Hallowhorn Grounds. If he's not there, skip to the Radahn fight.
- Retrieve the Fingerslayer Blade. This is in the Night's Sacred Ground in Nokron. Bringing this back to Ranni is the "point of no return" for certain other NPC quests (like Seluvis), so finish his stuff first if you want his puppets.
- Use the Carian Inverted Statue. Ranni gives this to you. It’s for the Carian Study Hall. It doesn't move her quest forward directly, but it’s how you get the Cursemark of Death for Fia’s ending.
- Reset at the Site of Grace. If an NPC isn't appearing where a guide says they should be, "Pass Time" to morning at a grace. It forces the game to reload NPC positions.
The tower is a beacon. It's the start of the "Age of Stars" ending, which is widely considered the "best" or at least the most complete ending to the game. It takes you through Nokron, Nokstella, the Lake of Rot, and eventually to the Moonlight Altar. But it all starts with getting through that one door in Liurnia.
Check your inventory for Celestial Dew now. If you've even looked at an NPC funny, you might need it. Head to the Church of Vows, clean up your record, and that seal on the tower will usually vanish. From there, the stars are yours.
