NetEase really didn't hold back. When Marvel Rivals first started making waves, everyone assumed we’d just get the standard Avengers-heavy roster with a couple of mutants sprinkled in for flavor. Boy, were we wrong. Honestly, the X-Men have basically taken over the competitive ladder in 2026. If you aren't playing around a Magneto shield or getting absolutely shredded by a Magik combo, are you even playing the same game?
It’s not just about fan service. The way these mutants play is fundamentally different from the "boots on the ground" feel of characters like Captain America or The Punisher. They bring a level of verticality and weirdness that keeps the meta constantly shifting.
The Current X-Men Roster: Who’s Actually Playable?
Right now, the mutant lineup is surprisingly deep. You've got heavy hitters that have been there since the early days and a few newer additions that have completely flipped the script. Here is the current state of the X-Men in Marvel Rivals:
- Magneto (Vanguard): The literal king of the meta. If you're looking for a tank that does more than just stand there and take hits, he's it.
- Storm (Duelist): An Omega-level threat who spends more time in the air than on the ground. She’s the ultimate team player for damage dealers.
- Magik (Duelist): If you like being a "nightmare in the backline," Illyana is your girl. She’s all about portals and big, sweeping sword strikes.
- Psylocke (Duelist): The stealth queen. She’s a 5-star difficulty character for a reason. If you mess up her combo, you’re basically a sitting duck.
- Emma Frost (Vanguard): Added in Season 2, she’s a "bruiser" tank. She turns into diamond and just refuses to die while chokeslamming enemies out of their ultimates.
- Namor (Duelist): Technically a mutant, though he hangs out with the sea crowd. He’s the guy you pick when the enemy team is running a "dive" comp that’s getting too annoying.
- Phoenix (Duelist): A Season 3 arrival. She plays a bit like Hela but with way more explosive potential and a massive "get off me" dash.
- Rogue (Vanguard): One of the more recent additions. Her whole thing is—obviously—stealing what makes other heroes good.
- Wolverine (Duelist): Logan finally clawed his way into the B-tier. He’s a relentless brawler who excels at staying in the fight way longer than he should.
Why Magneto is the Anchor You Need
Look, if you’re playing Competitive and nobody picks Magneto, you’re probably going to have a bad time. He’s currently sitting in the S+ tier because his kit is just too versatile to ignore.
The coolest thing about him is the Metallic Curtain. Unlike other shields that have a health bar, this thing runs on energy. You can have a whole team unloading their ultimates into it, and as long as he has energy, that shield isn't breaking. It’s perfect for blocking those massive burst windows.
He also has this "Team-Up" with Scarlet Witch (and more recently Gambit) that lets him go on the offensive. You haven't lived until you've seen a Magneto infuse chaos energy into a giant metallic greatsword and just start deleting people.

Quick Tip: Don't just hold the shield up forever. You need to weave in his Iron Volley. The projectiles are a bit slow, so you have to lead your shots, but the explosion damage at the end of the flight path is no joke.
Storm and the Aerial Meta
Storm is kinda weird as a Duelist. Usually, Duelists are supposed to just kill things, but Ororo spends half her time buffing the team. She has a permanent aura around her. If she’s in Tornado mode, everyone moves faster. If she’s in Thunder mode, everyone hits harder.
The mistake most people make? Flying too high.
If you’re a mile up in the sky, your team doesn't get your buffs. You want to stay just above the fray, using vertical cover like rooftops or Groot's walls to peek-a-boo the enemy. Her Omega Hurricane ultimate is a literal game-changer—it pulls everyone in like a black hole while zapping them. Pair that with a Human Torch or a Thor, and it’s an instant team wipe.
The High-Skill Mutants: Magik and Psylocke
If you want to feel like a pro, these are the two you pick. But be warned: you will fail a lot before you get good.

Magik (The Backline Terror)
Magik is all about the Stepping Discs. You portal in, hit a combo, and portal out. Her passive is what makes her stay alive—every bit of damage she deals turns into "Bonus Health" (overhealth).
- The Combo: Most pros go for the Dash -> Eldritch Whirl -> Melee cancel.
- Darkchild: When she ults, she gets all her cooldowns back. Use everything you have, pop the ult, then use it all again. It's devastating.
Psylocke (The Ninja)
Psylocke is even harder. She uses a Psionic Crossbow for her primary, and every hit reduces the cooldown of her other abilities. If you can't aim, you won't have your dash or your stealth when you need them.
She’s basically a reset character. You go in with Psychic Stealth, hit a target with Wing Shurikens, dash through them to recall the shurikens (which does double damage), and then get out. If you miss the shurikens, you’re stuck in the middle of the enemy team with no escape. It’s stressful, honestly.
What Most People Get Wrong About X-Men Members in Marvel Rivals
There’s a common misconception that because characters like Wolverine or Rogue have "healing" or "tankiness" in their lore, they can just 1v5 the enemy team.
In Marvel Rivals, they are extremely dependent on their roles. Wolverine is a B-tier Duelist right now because if he gets stunned, he’s done. He doesn't have the "get out of jail free" cards that Magik or Spider-Man have. You have to play him like a shark—circle the edges, wait for someone to get low, and then pounce.
Similarly, Emma Frost is a great Vanguard, but she’s a "selfish" tank. She doesn't have a giant shield to protect the whole team like Doctor Strange or Magneto. She’s there to soak up focus fire and disrupt the enemy's flow. If your team needs a protector, picking Emma over Magneto is usually a mistake.

Surprising Synergy: The "Mental Projection" Link
One of the coolest, least-talked-about features is the Season 2 Team-Up between Emma Frost, Magneto, and Psylocke.
When all three are on the team, Emma creates "Psychic Echoes." Basically, she creates illusory projections of the other two from the enemy's perspective. It makes the battlefield look like there are twice as many mutants as there actually are. It’s absolute chaos for hitscan characters like The Punisher who are trying to find the "real" Psylocke before she deletes their healer.
Getting Started with the Mutants
If you’re new to the game or just haven't touched the X-Men side of the roster yet, here is the path I’d recommend:
- Start with Magneto. He’s the most forgiving. Even if you aren't hitting your shots, your shields are helping the team. You'll learn the flow of the frontline without dying every five seconds.
- Move to Storm. She teaches you about positioning and why verticality matters in this game. You’ll start seeing the maps differently when you realize you don't have to walk through the main gates.
- Practice Magik in the Training Room. Do not take her into Competitive until you can do her basic dash-cancel combo in your sleep. You’ll just end up feeding the enemy team.
The mutant roster is only going to grow. We already have rumors of Cyclops and Nightcrawler being tested for Season 7. For now, mastering the current Marvel Rivals X-Men members is the fastest way to climb the ranks, especially since Magneto and Magik are basically defining how the game is played at the highest levels.
Check your Team-Up menu before every match. If you see a teammate lock in Gambit, grab Magneto. If someone picks Thor, give Storm a look. The synergies are where the real power lies.
