[WIP] My first pixel art

Hello, this is my first piece of pixel art.  It's a saber-toothed rat, 7 colors, 64x32.  I made it in GIMP with the pencil tool.  I used this mouse for reference when drawing my rat.

I started with a black outline, filled in the basic colors and then tried to shade.  I admit I'm no artist, but I want to improve.  Can anyone give me any advice on how to make it better?

maybe instead of the overpowering black try a dark brown outline instead

from the looks of it , its quite ok.


but the front tooth looks like its about to drop off, could use some adjusting

also it would look  nicer if the ear shown some sign of depth.( according to the references mouse )

   well something like this , but well u should change the color to your liking, just showing u what i mean

hmm as mention by the person above me , might be better to use a different outline

its quite decent for yoru first pixel art, keep up the good work

Thanks for the comments everybody    It helped me out a lot.

I made some changes to my original attempt.  The saber-toothed rat now has a dark brown outline, repositioned tooth, darkness in his ear, darkness behind his ear, shape to his back leg and a longer tail.  I added some highlights too, but I'm not sure if I added them well.  I'm still trying to figure out how to draw.

I think part 2 is an improvement over my original attempt.  What do you think?  Any suggestions on how to make it even better?
