What up, Gs

on: March 19, 2006, 02:02:29 am
Uhm ... this is just a compilation of what i've done over the past few weeks out of the very little free time that I have.

This is just some demon I wipped up, because I wanted something to animate that I could give character to. His pinky is a tad ... crippled in the running animation, and I think his head warps a tad in both of them. The two before the last are color swaps, and the last is a small mockup with the character against the background. I never did the attack animation (its still not even finished), and doubt I ever will.

I guess this is his kid, or something. I was impressed at how good this turned out to be ( not in a cocky sense; i just never felt that confident about animating ). The bottom one is a colorswap ( and also tweaked the legs ).

A Boktai inspired mockup (320x240). Always loved the view ( not sure what its called ), and thought I'd give it a try. Creating tiles in this view is probably one of the most difficult tasks i've run into pixelling, but it was really fun to do. Some tiles may be out of place, i'm not sure. I'm so fucking proud of it, though.

And a bird smoking ... which I advise you to 2x, because its difficult to distinguish anything at 1x.

Thanks goes out to Madgarden for helping me on the animations. Comments are critique are appreciated. :)

Oh, treats! Thank you for posting, Darion, I adore your art. The running animations of demon tub sure could use being faster a bit or more than a bit. Kid is just great all-around. The colourswap wastes those middle orange to pink shades though, too close to each other.

Ack. these are some of the best pixels i've seen in a long time. You make me want to animate all over the place. Boktai mockup is swish too.
Have you worked on any published games i could check out?

Only crits are the demon animations are a bit slow like helm mentioned. Also the smokin bird's smoke seems to jump.
thanks Dogmeat!

Really nice character shown in the animations. I really like it when you animate just because it's always interesting to look at, nothing is too rigid or bland.

I also really enjoy your palettes. The greens and reds that dominate in your style lately are beautiful. Although I don't like the red mixed with black in the mockup. I've never been into black being used that much and especially with red, that's a preference issue though.

It almost makes me want to give animation another shot, but I know I'll end up quitting.

S'very nice indeed! Love the look of it although it'd be interesting to see if a whole game could have that look without it getting a bit monotonous.

Particularly love the Boktai thing because I'm a whore for isometric.

Actually it's axonometric, but who really cares? Isometric is a nice catch-all term.

So awesome! I love the side view mockup with the yellow demon.

I think you should lose the brightest highlight on the tiled floors in the iso mockup, though. It's making the floor pop out too much and interferes with the baddies.

Very stylish, those... they have a great look, remind me a lot of books like "The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Twisted Tales", etc.

I'm not sure about the color schemes, they burn my brain, especially the red... others seem to like them, though, so I won't stickle too much. Nice work.

These are fantastic. I reall dig the mockups; lovely palette and design. Those animations are very well done, smooth balanced, and kinda funny to watch, again great job with these.

The only thing irking me is the text in your second mockup, it should be AA'd for clarity. Also some of the numbers aren't italicized o.o?

Wow, thanks guys!

Helm: Yeah, I only used 4 frames for fatty's animations, the kids is 12. Hmm, I can tell the nose is pink at 1X? I'll see what I can do.

Akira: I've worked on a few games, but none that have actually been published. I usually end up doing crap, and they cancel the game, with me getting nothing. The jumping smoke was intentional, but I can see how it looks funky to you.

Blick: Oh? I wish I saved the layers so I could go back and fiddle with the colors. Yes, it is a preference issue, but it tells me what i'm doing wrong/right. :)

Baccaman: :D That means a lot coming from you, man!

Camus: I would just say it takes an assload of patience and planning. :s

Ryumaru: That character took me the longest to get right, since hes much larger and not of a typical human shape. It was difficult in general to match them up with the perspective.

Alex: Thanks. :)

Derek: Thanks, man. :)

Zach: Only if you bare mine first. :3

Crab:

It does help to contrast the characters more. :) Thanks a lot!

Wallaby: Another! Thanks for the opinion, though.

Dhaos: I would expect it to come out very blurry. I would also have to consider whats behind it; I could use alphablending, but ... I'd rather not. :S I'll see what I can do.

For those of you who didn't like the colors in the mockup:

How is this?

The blue is definitely easier on the eyes and makes the characters easier to distinguish.

In Boktai they often change the top of the tile, where the color meets the black, which I think helps make it look less flat. Like above the doors in this picture sink in a little (which you did a bit with the double door)

And less noticably with the rock formations here:

I think you should have the bricks protrude from the wall a little by altering that top line to show it. I also think your doors could be taller, it looks like some of the characters wouldn't be able to go through them.

Awesome stuff D-man. Those animation have a lot of life.

I think Helm means the main skin tone and the colour under the eye that gets lost in the redish version of the kid.

keep it up

Thanks again, boys.

Ptoing: OH ... ok. I'll remember that next time around.

Blick: Yeah, I like that suggestion. I'm working on another mockup as of now.

Again, thanks all. I appreciate the feedback.
