Floppy Disk Avatar

on: January 02, 2010, 07:44:11 pm

I'm in the process of making a batch of free avatars and this is one of the first ones. What do you think?

It's very clean-cut, simple and readable, yet still remains interesting and eye-grabbing. I believe you were meant to make avatars :D

I quickly played around with some stuff. Mostly AA.
It's hit and miss.
ME <--> YOU
AA helps the mouth. Softens some of the corners, might want to play with the AA and the palette to get some smoother AA.
Very cute, just wanted to give you something to consider.
You might want to also look at some of Panda's stuff. He has some really nice AA on his work.

Even though the AA is nice in your edit, I still perfer the op's becasue of it's readability.
Photocopier: the fact that arne can also code so well
Photocopier: is horrificly unfair

That AA doesn't work anyway because it's creating unnatural round shapes to an object that shouldn't have them.  Straight and 45 degree diagonal lines don't create a need for AA on their own.

Thanks for all the comments, everyone!

@Johnathan: I appreciate you trying to help, but an almost completely flat object does not need AA to make it look round.

Do, though, consider the thing he did with the shading band 1-pixel-height difference between the plastic part and the metal part - does a lot for the subtle flat 3d feel.
