16 x 16 zelda type character

on: December 30, 2009, 04:58:38 pm
I just want some feedback on this 16x16 zelda type sprite, which is based sort of on the links awakening sprite.  Included a quick sketch of what the character is actually supposed to look like but its kind of hard to transfer that into 16x16 pixels.  the colors are sort of inspired by a.b. lazer

Nice, pleasant design. First priority in a sprite of this scale is visual clarity, & this sprite is quite good in that regard, but could be enhanced further.

My interpretation of the head-area is continuously flipping between the intended hair, & a Commander Keen style helmet - this could probably be fixed by tapering the hair on the sides down a little.
The torso area is a little too busy. Personally, I think when you find you are representing entire details, such as the open-neck shirt, with single pixels, it's time to either simplify your design or increase your image resolution.

Sort of subjective, but if you're trying to adhere to the Link's Awakening style more fully, here's something to consider.
The Link sprite uses a consolidated color palette effectively ... if the developer's had been free of color restrictions, they probably wouldn't have chosen a skin tone for the highlights of the fabric, or a green to AA the skin into the black outlines (!), but it would have lost it's distinctive charm as a consequence.

The head doesn't bob up and down in the north and south versions. Might not be obvious on a static screen, but when scrolling could look a bit weird.

my only issue with this is that some of the colors blend in with each other to much. like hair with skin and so on. but then you have things greatly seperated like shoes with clothes, visually confusing!

great to see some old school zelda styling :)

I thought it looks pretty decent. My own issue is that it lacks characteristic.
If you looks at Link, you can tell he has a pair of long ears, and a hat... plus that he's dress in green... you can convince that he's an elf.

Yours on the other hand looks very much like any other girl.

Hope the comment is not too late for changes though :)

I always praise originality, but I think "looking at your opponent when attacking them" is actually a pretty good cliche to keep :P
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.
