WIP Lickitung

on: December 23, 2009, 09:00:35 pm
Hi, I was working on a Lickitung, and I got stuck on his tongue.

Without the tongue, with, and the ref.

It just doesnt look like hes pushing his tongue out like in the ref. I'll keep toying with it until I get it, but advice would be helpful.

Thank you.

make the tongue twist more towards the ground.
Photocopier: the fact that arne can also code so well
Photocopier: is horrificly unfair

His upper jaw doesn't protrude as much as in the original image

also, as long as the mouth cavity is colored white the feeling of depth will be lost, so be sure to color it darker if you want to see how it's gonna look later too

grab the ref and extend the lines that are covered by the tongue. Then copy that picture closely. or just trace the ref.

... or just trace the ref.

:blind: That's the easy way out!

Notice how the head is not straight at the viewer; make sure that the tongue follows this view and curls down the throat at a similar angle (i e. move the "bulges" that the tongue makes inside the mouth to the right (our right) and then adjust the bulges accordingly).

in the original ref his tongue is shorter, up higher, and out more. The reason yours doesn't look like it's being "pushed" out is basically because it's limp... haha. Notice how yours cuts off the feet and the ref doesn't? Use the things around the tongue to judge where it should be.

OK, I tried to look at the ref more closely, and add rough shading to get some kind of depth going.

Without tongue, with, and tongue by itself.

I think the shape is going well, but that big white block represents the lineart I'm stuck at. Since the curve is ever so slight, it's really hard not to come into jags.

But, I do like how this is coming.

Current versus ref. Coming out pretty good color wise I think, but that tongue is still teasing me. Not quite like the ref, but at least you can tell its his tongue now.
