[WIP] Wooden skull

on: December 22, 2009, 03:45:07 pm
Yes! I have returned from.. wherever I came from.
So I thought of this idea of a wooden skull and this is what I have so far:

I am really stuck on highlights as well as the teeth.
C&C appriciated.

EDIT:
Added very little things. Touched up the teeth, attempting some highlights and AA aswell as adding a twig sort of.

Yo.! I think I can help you out a bit with the teeth:

if you look at those green lines you see that the upper row begins with a straight line. and a few pixels beneath the straight line there is a curved line. this line's length and distance from the upper line depends on the size of your skull ofc. then again a few pixels under the curved line is another line, this time with even more a curve.

the example is done in a few secs :P so the one with ''shading'' looks dumb, i know :P

little tip if you begin with the teeth.: do not give the teeth a real outline, that will make the teeth look like licorice if you know what i mean :D

Anyway, the skull so far looks pretty cool. Tho' i think you should pick other colors :D

Thanks a bunch. :)

And about the colors; I am going to give it more colors, aswell as nice little details to touch it up and make it more "woodish".

you need to use browns that came from wood, yours are little too green, maybe you can use warmer browns....and then you can also add a lighter brown for highlights. Also if you want to give the idea of wood you must add some wood grain. I hope my comments will be useful...nice drawing as well!!

Excuse my double post. Please.

Okay, so I added a few things, but it just looks very strange to me.
I would like to add some leaves to the twig but I am not sure about how to do the leaf.
Thanks in advance.

finish the actual skull before you add accessories.

everything seems pretty crammed right now. make the skull smaller so you can expand on it or make the canvas bigger.

Here's an edit I made (Note: I'm no pro, not even close). But you need to look more to your reference, and if you don't have one, google it. Here's is the one I used: link.

And here is the incomplete edit.

- The shape of the one you made looks very weird.
- The skull you made (something I didn't edit) has three central incisors.
- The skull is looking to the right, but we can see the skull's left cheek/jaw looking frontwards.
- The eye sockets are too triangular.
- The highlight is very strong and seems unnatural. (Mine isn't perfect, I know, is pretty awful  :(, but maybe you'll get the idea)

And finally as twodayslate said, finish the skull, then start adding details/accessories.

The skull is very squat and skewed. Are you using a reference?
The teeth are very flat on top and perfectly outlines, try blocking out the different shades to create depth and a more natural look.
Here's a rough idea of what I mean, perhaps use a woodgrain texture in addition to the little branch so it's clear that the skull is wooden :)

Necro-bumping-update-time!

Okay, so I finally updated this... after alot of time.
Iam seriously stuck on highlighting the top of the skull, I cant seem to do it without making it look awkward.
Help greatly appriciated.

reference is there, aswell as all the other stuff.

Thanks in advance.
