I still hate girls.

on: December 17, 2009, 07:55:46 pm
...Ok, maybe not, but I hate trying to draw them.

It's less creative than what a brain-dead monkey could come up with, but it was more an exercise than real artistic project. I've never really pixeled anything from start to finish this size, so I thought it would be fun to try. The bigger I get, the more I notice how much more I really need to work on my fundamentals, and it might start bugging me enough to actually do some real studies. </3

Yeah, so now that I look at it on site, it looks more like a supermodel photo shoot where the director wanted to create an "average girl" vibe. I really should try drawing a less perfect body sometime.

Second try:

She bends the right leg and the leftone is straight, but the feet are almost at the same height.
Thus the right leg seems longer  ;)

Her right foot's heel is raised in the air while the other is flat on the ground, so the feet aren't really the giveaway. However, the shading under her right kneecap is what I think is making the leg bend too strong.

Maybe some shading under her left arm next to her armpit.

I think this is a great piece; your choice of color and the way you handle your lines and shapes makes people a powerful subject matter for you.

Nice shading and pose!

Though I feel her torso is too long and thin~ We women are a bit more hourglass shaped ya'know :D
If you see where her crotch starts, then add that on to the length of her torso...I think her torso needs to be taken down a couple of pixels?

Yeahh you're definetly moving in the right direction now :D!

Oh the boobs might need a little adjustment too, just something that caught my eye~ they look like she's standing completely straight. She's leaning a little bit so in reality so one would be a bit higher up than the other to match the curve of her torso. (The one on our right should be a notch higher...)

Dem hips... mmm, oh uh, right, uh ... Right, you should add more contrast to the piece, make the skin rosier as well.

That face is more then a little scary. Either you chose some odd places to highlight or she has a gigantic hook-nose.

Here is an edit for the face:

Either the waist is too thin or the hips are too wide. Feet look a bit stubby too.

based on EE's edit :D
Mostly on the torso and waist. As EE said, you need either thinner hips or a wider waist.
On the chest, you've got a pretty common problem, trying to define the tits with an outline at the bottom :P They've got form to 'em, form that you're ignoring. I completely got rid of the outline and used shadows to define them instead. even if you're using an outline, the outline should be where the greatest contrast is, meaning the middle of the breast and not the bottom.
Oh yes naked women are beautiful
But I like shrimps more haha ;)

I'm still getting that different leg length vibe from this peice.
I personally preferred the previous colours because I liked that way they balanced with the blues in the jeans

I hate girls too.

Hi. I made her 6 and a half heads tall which is pretty normal for a lot of girls. Keep in mind that right on the genitals is usually the middle point of someone's height. There are people with shorter legs than that of course but you should keep it in mind anyway. Small fixes on arm and I gave her a shoulder I thought would show, also. Hope I'm helping.

Thank you thank you, that left arm was killing me. I tried to lessen the curve on the leg; did it help with the length issue?

I'm new to this so feel free to ignore me :)

Looking at it, I get a feeling that the shoulders and the hips are pointing in different directions.
Almost like her upper body was twisted a full rotation and a bit, which corkscrewed her midriff.

Is my concept of perspective skewed?

That belt has been bothering me for a while, it makes the hips feel skewed.

She does have a belt on, right? Sooo, the pants would stay on her hips, and I also lifted her jeans around her right ankle to compensate.
I don't like all the yellow in the picture, the highlights being used on the shirt are much better for the skin especially.

Yeah, that belt kinda got messed up when I was editing her arm. Although, her hips are not perfectly horizontal. If they were, then her legs would definitely be different lengths. I tried to push her left hip back a little bit; hopefully that helped with the perspective problem.

Second try. I was smart, and started with a ref this time! (apologies for the mirroredness)

interesting pose. the contrast in the new one looks better to me. however, a few issues. most noticeable is the outline looks disjointed and a bit jarring, you could make it less extreme. also, her right foot looks a little squashed.

Lots and lots of tweaking. I'm still not sure about her foot though. Is it any better?

She really needs hips.  Hips ought to be as wide or wider than the shoulders (your reference pic shows this too).  My guess is at least 3-4 more pixels on the right and 1-2 more pixels on the left.  Maybe more.

Added some pixels, but did not adjust the shading:

I feel kinda ungrateful saying that you're wrong, it's just that I've never ever ever seen a girl in real life with hips wider than her shoulders, and it's not that I just wasn't looking for it, I have specifically looked for that ratio. Also, could you show me how the ref's hips are as wide as her shoulders? I don't see it.

HOWEVER! You unearthed the fact that I downplayed her right leg quite a bit. I also messed up a little bit on her left leg, but the dress masked it.

I'm not sure if it helped with that hipless feeling. I'm just kinda guessing with the fabric.  :blind:

Well, ok.  Hips wider than shoulders is rare, but hips as wide as shoulders is common.

The widest point on the hips occurs at the top of the thighs, going across the groin.  In the linked picture the widest point of the shoulders is wider than the widest of the hips, but not by much.  I think it would be less than 1 pixel at the size you're using.

Ref 1: http://fineart.sk/show.php?w=1367  (large image, nude)

Your reference pic:

Difficult to measure accurately because of the twist in the pose and the hair, but she has a slightly more hourglass figure than the woman in the ref pic I linked above.

I measure about 72 pixels across the shoulders (maybe as high as 75 pixels), 63 at the top of the hips, and 72 again at the bottom of the hips (maybe as low as 70).

At what should be the widest point is roughly 40 pixels from edge to centerline, so maybe as high as 79 or so at the widest point, but this has a lot of error in the measure.

So yeah, hips = shoulders in width is a good rule of thumb for women.

Also, your reference pic has her hip further to the right than her shoulder (blue line), while you've got the hip far to the inside of the shoulder.  How closely do you want to match the reference pose?
