Re-emergence of pixel art on the iPhone?

on: December 06, 2009, 11:32:33 pm
So, my last thread was on a disturbing trend, but now I think we might have an brighter future...

Look at this:

Pretty neat, imo, even though it is rather rough in some areas (the roof tiles, for example, hurts my eyes).

Anyone else spotted really well pixeled games on the iPhone?

Those roof tiles look edible.  :0'
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

I love those graphics! What's the name of the game and company?

Ooops, sorry. It's called "Inotia: A wanderer of Luone" (it's a sequel not to be confused with the first game, which apparently is not nearly as good).

It's a standard RPG, quite fun, but be aware that it's not exactly retail polish. But still one of the best efforts on the iPhone yet.

Here's another quite nice pixeled effort:

It's called Creepytown and has a lite version.

This picture inspires me in many ways.  ;D

This is cool to see! Makes me think of iPhone as an actual for really-real serious gaming platform. I'm pretty ignorant on the matter, though :)

The ghost one could use a touch of the ol' AA.

Those roof tiles look edible.  :0'
When I first read that, I thought you said "editable"   I think the dialogue should be more along the lines of "Is there a place where I can get some actual clothes?"

Are you serious? I mean that rpg looks alright, but the pixelart itself is not that outstanding.
Not a big fan of touch screens, but every device where itīs reasonable to work with pixels is welcome.

I love the graphics, because they just work very well (the sprites mainly, the tiles are only average quality). The sprites show a very good grasp on volumes and shading.
I also love the character sprites in that attack screenshot. Very well done. Is it masterful? Maybe not, but the quality is still excellent.

If you have better examples of pixel art in games that came out in recent times, be sure to share, but I think it's fair to say that it's excellent quality for a current-gen pixel art game.

I think the dull noisy background is sorta killing the sprites - put them in a chrono trigger-like hand-pixeled space and they'll start looking delicious.
