Isometric: Hill

on: December 06, 2009, 02:58:31 am
I just began pixeling isometric and could need some C&C on my first work:

A few suggestions for this
-Higher slope.
-more contrast.
-more interesting colors.
-less noisy grass texture.
This is a lot to just throw at you, but isometric is tough, you have really study iso games to learn all the tricks. I would refer you to the list of topics that go over all the essential stuff like textures and contrast so you can have some legit refs to work off of.

My sentences might seem like I'm complaining but I'm not, it's just my crappy english. I'm here to learn :)

I rather not get influenced by other work. I highly appreciate your comments.

- Higher Slope: Well, that depends on what kind of higher ground I'm looking for. Some of the "hills" I call them will have a lower slope while some might have a higher slope. But do you feel it's essential in iso to skip lower slops and focus on higher?

- More contrast: How do you mean exactly? More contrast to the grass or to the different sides?

- Colors: Well this was my first base that I tested to add grass to: http://www.key2heaven.com/screenshots/hilldone.bmp
I took the grass from my 2d game ( http://www.key2heaven.com/screenshots/target1.PNG ), dunno if that's the grass I'm going to use but for my pixel skill it was okay for my first game. Are you recommending that I use more colors in the grass perhaps?

- Texture: The noisy grass texture happened when I made it darker. I felt it was alright for my old game ( http://www.key2heaven.com/screenshots/target3.PNG ). Or do you think that grass has a too noisy grass texture as well?

Almost the same but with grass around it.

My first comment would be about the lightsource. It seems to be confused somewhat.

If you look at the darker sides, (top right slope and top corner slopes) This would suggest a lightsource from somwhere between bottom left and bottom.

If it was exactly bottom-left then the right corner slope would be the same as the top corner slope, if the lightsource was directly from the bottom, then the top-left slope would be the same as the top right-slope. So whilst it is neither, the lightsource suggested (from the shadowed edges) falls somewhere between the two.

If we now look at the lit edges, then it would suggest a lightsource somewhere between directly left, and bottom left and, again, not actually exactly either, but somewhere between.

Hmm.. so which is it? The lightsource indicated by 'lit' faces differs from that suggested by the 'shadowed' faces.

As for the angles of the slope, that is ok (and even verging on the 'good' side of 'ok') - if you are planning to have a very uneven hilly surface. However, if the slopes are only few with larger flat areas, then a slightly steeper slope might help emphasise the fact that there is a slope involved.

You will really need slightly more shades of green than you are currently using, with a wider range than you are currently using to correctly shade the ground with increased contrast (for the faces).

Oh yeah, I can see now that the lightning was way off. This is what I managed to do with the proper lightning and that's starting to look good. If you have more suggestions on how to improve the lightning, feel free to share it.

I'm not very confident in the grass right now. I did add 1 more color to it. But I will have to think about it.

You've improved the tiling a lot. But I find the grass unconvincing. It has more of the appearance of a stringently groomed lawn, rather than a field or such. I say draw the grass more in terms of tufts and clusters. Vary the hue and saturation of the colours a little more, too. Get more blue into the shadows and more yellow into the lights perhaps (to fit daylight lighting).

What exactly is the piece for?

It's for my MMORPG. I'm not going to update the grass right now because I'm little occupied with the house. But I will submit the grass later on and see what you think then.
