Shucks, said he. (Cyber punk-2nd progress)

on: March 12, 2006, 01:16:59 am

My take on a can of whoopass. Yes, influenced by those old laser gun figures, forgot who made them. Just a little practice. 15 colors.

Comments are appreciated, as are edits :)

Zoomed up. Appears to be solid. No glaring mistakes.
Looks cool. Good job. :D

The hue rotation on that gun flare is sweeet. The gun could use a bit more form definition, kind of hard to make out it's volume. Same thing for the guy himself, he's a bit undefined. Maybe more difference between values (colors' brightness)?

It's the head i think,
Could use a few darker tones to deifne the facial expression especially.

I'm envisioning it being a literal huge can or a cucumber actualy.

You heard me.

Thanks for the reply. As for the dude, yea, I might get back to him and deck him out...but not right now, its too late, and I'm drained after doingthis:

Pretty energy blast, such yummy colors. *eats them*. The shape-like-shading is pretty cool, but you seemed to have randomly AA'd parts of the body, a bit more consistency might be nice ^^U.

Your new background uses a great palette, but the composition is a bit hard to follow. The guys are completely black while the terrain is fairly well lit... I have a feeling its just a style thing though. Still pretty neat.

Darion did the said pieces that inspired you.

I don't really like the texturing of the gun, and the random dither on one hand makes little sense. Otherwise, nice.

Exactly. I knew it was D something. Thanks for the tips, I forgot abou that. I had this all dithered up before, never removed that part. :P

Thanks for the reply Dhaos- I'm glad you like the colors! Could you explain what 'more consistancy means'? I'm not the best AA-er.
I was under the impression the the background sucked- its only my second actual environment. Its nice to have some encouragement. :)

Sorry for the double post, but I thought I'd share this mess:

Still a big WIP, I don't know if I want to finish or not.

It reminds me of Helm's usage of colors in the face area. Tres sexy. Don't discredit that color choice.
The beam certainly is a step down from that first piece though. =/
I'm not sure I agree with the darkest grey (black?) at the edge of the beam-gun-samus-megaman-thing. It's not consistent with the rest of the color choice (meaning it doesn't match). Either make it lighter, or use some darker colors in the rest of the piece.
Anyways, another cool piece.  8)

No, it really is a good palette, but you need to exercise the colors a little more.

example:

How did you do that? :o Thats inspirational and depressing at the same time, I don't think I'll ever be able to do that.

Yeah, that last one is great, especially the palette.

Monsoon, did you use the same palette as Kal Slayer? That's quite impressive...as always.

It's the same palette, though I killed off one of the browns.
The edit wasn't meant to cause depression, Kal Slayer. I just wanted to prove to you that the palette is, in fact, very good.
You really ought to finish it, but try to push those colors as far as they can go.

On the edit, you can see that I created a little on-screen palette. Then I made rows of colors to see how well certain colors meshed when placed next to eachother. (I guess I should say that I made gradients using different colors.)  A useful tip?

Thanks for taking the time to reply and edit, Monsoon. I suppose I ought to finish it so not to disappoint the people who want it done. :)

I've redone a the face and a few other things here:

-Redid the facial shading (Thanks for giving me a reference Monsoon)
-Shaded the Mohawk.
-Tweaked the beam.
-Got rid of the black on the laser.

Next: Redoing the short hair and the arms.

(Thanks again for all the useful replies guys, its nice to have a thread replied to.)

I'm not even sure if I knew what I was doing so um wee?

[EDIT]:

-AA'd every area of the image
-the teal you used was actually darker than the mid-grey tone so I replaced it with a light green and the brightest gray tone
-tried to simplify the gun by removing alot of the details and used pre-existing colors mostly
-expanded the shadow to show the gun
-removed that thingy under the blast, I have no idea what it was/is/will be
*tried highlighting the hand, but it destroyed the abstract~flat look of the image

As far as consistency, you could either A) AA everything or B) AA nothing; with images like this. I felt that the AA you added in was fairly random and inconsistent, you generally AA curved area, of which there are alot of in that image.

Maybe some of this helped, maybe it ruined the image, but it is still important to remember bright glowy colors are awesome, never forget that.

With your newer image, it's looking good so far. Rather wild.

Good edit, but I think you may have over AA'd. A few areas were fine how they were. ;) But, I get the point. I like the gun edit.

Thank you!

EDIT:
More updates.

The new one's shaping up great. Try not to overstress the 2x size square pixels you use. it's a good idea ( accentuates the CA ) but don't overdo it. There's no dithering on Dhaos's edit, I guess you mean over-aa? If so, yeah he did, but first you learn to do as he did, and then you don't do it :) so study it

Yea, AA. Thanks for catching that, Helm.

I'll take your advice into account, its always so tempting to use the 2x.

(By CA, do you mean computer aesthetic? If not, I'm lost)

It impresses me how much you have improved from your first piece, it is an assload better. I would just second what Helm. Also, watch yourself when detailing, because you may overdue it, leaving us to interprit whats going on ( specifically the head ).

I'm flattered that I inspired you, thanks man. :)

i think you need to redo the little robit, i think it would look much better if you put as much effort into it as you did with the megaman guy
