Starting Anew

on: November 02, 2009, 11:37:27 pm
Well I've been an off ann on pixel artist for about 6 years now. I've never been real skilled at it and have had a lot of half-assed never finished projects go to waste.
I've always enjoyed pixel art but seem to get disappointed when something doesnt work out. I'd really like to start trying my hand at pixel art again and actually be productive and becoem atleast a good pixel artist, not looking to be perfect but I'd really like to improve greatly upon  my rather shaky foundation.

Anyways since I've come here to gether advice and info on how to improve i figure the best way would to be to post a sample of my pixel art. I started this about 3 hours ago and finished it in roughly an hour. Any critique or comments would be appreciated, and any links to good tutorials or tips on pixeling would be greatly appreciated.

It's just a rather simple isometric house with a nice little porch and a shed. I really like how the roof came out on this but am unsure on the rest. C&C appreciated, thanks for viewing.

I think it's a very nice start.  I like the garage shape and textures.

Design-wise, I'm not sure why the brick wall extends to the porch.  Usually the wall would stop where the porch starts, yes?

The windows could use a border, and maybe some way to open them.  Or some panes.

The stairs are huge compared to the rest of the house.  :)

You might give it something to break up the roof, like a chimney.

My two cents,
Tourist

Well it is a very crude imitation of my own house, that is why the brick extends in front of the porch (mine does the same)

I agree with you on the stairs i should definately make them smaller just now realized how huge they are, and I will try my best to improve the windows (theyre one of my weak points)

Even though I liked how the roof turned out I'll definately take your adivce and try to break it up with something because it is a rather large empty space as it is.

Thanks for your critique Tourist, and thanks for viewing.

EDIT :
Well I took some of your advice, I like how the new windows and the chimney looks (thought about making a nice smoke effect coming out of it but didnt want to go too complex) I tried to edit the stairs but they just were not coming out good at all so i'm going to start from scratch on those at a later time. Thanks again for the critique tourist it helped em improve my pixel drawling.
