Conceptual Pixel Art

on: November 11, 2009, 06:21:10 am
Hello.

It's been a long time since I've done any art and even longer since I've done pixel art, but I've been wondering about pixel art--or pixel art aesthetic--outside of the pixel art world as we know it here, with the general focus on video-gameness.  Maybe as an aesthetic that references the digital world or something.  I don't know.  The only stuff that I think of that's anything like this is http://superbrothers.ca/, which I happen to like a lot.  Does anyone know about art out there that may not be so connected to the underground pixel art thing going on here and in the indie games scene, maybe even paintings in art galleries or something, that references the pixel?  I'd be surprised if there wasn't any...

Not that I think that stuff would be better or anything than the stuff here--I have a load of problems with the conceptual art world--but I think it'd be interesting to look at some pixel art, even loosely defined, that comes from a completely different angle than here.

Seth

I love the Urban Invader. A graffiti artist who creates space invaders made from tiles in all sorts of urban environments around the world.

I remember also seeing (on youtube - before it got blocked from China) a guy that made piel art stuff using loads of Rubik's cubes. Fairly impressive stuff given the pretty dreadful 6 colour palette.

Cross-stich / Tapestry has been around for a very long time, and that is almost identical in essence to pixel art. Wehre we use restricted palettes, they are limited by the colours of thread they have.

Mosaics date back even longer - though seldom as grid-like as pixel art.

Sorry if I don't seem to ever comment on your posts, but anything hosted on imageshack or most image hosting web sites is blocked from China. If I can't see it I can't therefore comment on it :(

Right, I know about mosaics and tapestry, I guess I meant artwork that might reference the pixel specifically as a product of the digital age
