Pixelation Rebirth?

on: March 07, 2006, 03:31:19 pm
I've tried my best to salvage as much as i could from the old Pixelation forum, To put toward's a new Pixelation forum.
The forum look's exactly the same.. Minus the several button's and image's that haven't been replaced yet.
The reason i am trying to remake the old school Pixelation forum is because i know many people and my self miss it.
I'm open to any question's and suggestion's to make the forum's as cool and friendly as it was before.

I have never experienced old Pixelation but I here people all the time here talking about how great that forum was. What is the difference between this forum and the old one?

It's compact, The color's are recognizable, The community was really active and friendly and wasn't full of newb's back then.
Im thinkin of adding new features to it though.. Image upload, Integrated IRC..

As far as ressurecting pixelation, I believe it has been pep's plan to remake it and has been working on doing so.
As for when it will be ready with it's new feature, i am not sure, you'll have to ask Pep.
But work has already been made towards this goal, and haveing others doing the same thing will just confuse things i'm sure.

Remaking pixelation? What do you think Pixelopolis is for? Pep mentioned in the start that Pixelopolis was brought live to keep the community from becoming too fractured while he and the other people working behind the scenes prepared the final version.

argh!!! i HATE that blue!
Seconded.

Pep explains it here:

Agreed.  But I still think that starting a separate forum that just looks like the old Pixelation won't do anything.  Despite the fact that this place looks nothing like the old Pixelation, it feels like pixelation.  Pep and gang will let us know when they're ready to move over to the new Pixelation; Pixelopolis was a temp forum from the get-go.

Aye, aye, ye speak truth.
As for the accuracy of the forum, it is a rather wonderful likeness. I do sorta miss the nice, comfiness of those colors. This forum is like a new house; though it may be filled with the same great people, the walls remain barren and empty.

I think, because we don't really have people liking it equally, we shoudl just make the site skinnable, with the old pixelation blue available and the new, Pixelopolis style available as well. Then everyone is happy! :D

I disagree.  There's not been even one single moment where this forum has felt anything like Pixelation to me.  Hard to say why exactly.  I just felt much more comfortable there.  I got on better with people and the general feel of the place.  Pixelopolis just feels...empty to me....

Oh, and I like the blue.  That was pretty much my favorite forum and the good ol' blue look just appealed to me and had me spending a lot of time there browsing the artwork.  This damn SMF default skin just pisses me off and I'm a member of about 4 SMF forums who still ain't got around to coming up with a decent skin so they all look pretty much identical.

That's a good comment.. And i totally agree, I was just showing it was possible to remake the site but maybe somebody else such as Pep go ahead and sort it out.. It's more of a community thing to get rolling, I think people should start speaking out more instead of thinking "Oh, I shouldn't say that otherwise someone might disagree"

BTW the SMF pixelopolis forum look's cool when you press the button :D, Anyone agree

Though this is a default design, right? Thats not showing much enthusiasm for the forum.

I love the pixelopolis colors, too, but it would be nice to have an original design of its own. :s

And I am in 100% agreement with your response, Captain Blood. I really miss the feeling.

the good, old times.

I dont care what technical mumbojumbo you have to support a bland gray and white colorscheme, the pixelation color layour is far more personal and nostalgic. just the colorscheme made it feel like that comfortable little hole behind some abandoned house that only you know, and where you can be yourself that you have when you are a kid.

I couldnt care less for the banner though :p.

Aesthetical issues aside, I do think pixelation's values have been eroded in pixelopolis, I never saw random attacks on other people back there.
I remember it being pretty bad during the last couple of months before the hacking. Remember the trashings Dark Angel 13 would get in the threads he made?

He was an idiot though with a seemingly large ego.  There were instances where he'd insulted work on friends games that me and a buddy had done and then offered his services to improve them.  And was it him to tried to do 'minimalism' or something?  Been a while but I remember him being a bit of a troublemaker on Pixelation and the Game Maker forums.

I dunno if this is the default colour scheme. It works. I come here for the critique and the pixel discussion, not because of the colours, and pixelopolis still delivers in my opinion (I do not say this because I am a moderator, people who know me know that I don't mince my words) and that's what's important.

I'm certain though, that when it becomes a priority, the skinning of the forum will be worked on.

its not the appearance or fancy features of a forum that make it good.
its the people. the members are the ones that make the community.
you will never have pixelation back ever the same. some of those members quit and then new ones here joined. changes personality and atmosphere.
think of it like this... you get together with some good friends and you always hang out at this one persons house just cause.. well one day you end up just wandering out in the streets. you still have a goodtime. you still enjoy whos around. basically its all the same.. just scenery is different.

i duno.

What?

I do notice a difference between the peeps here and at the old Pixelation.
I dunno. The old pixelation seemed more...robust and active. Sure, there are cool people here, and it's a cool place to get crits, but there were more people on the old forums, and the cool ones were more active.

Like someone said in another thread about making a banner for this forum, I'm still hoping this forum's just a temp.

I've been on the pixel scene years and years and I think it's probably your experience that's painting it as such. Everybody fondly remembers the forum as being best when they first arrived at it, I guess. It's natural. As far as meaningful critique per post ratio goes, I think we're in a pretty good place, only second to when pixelation was new new new and there were 10 people on the forum all trading absurdly extensive critique, slapped graph paper on each other's art and generally invented a lot of the terminology we use now.

Yeah, there always have been posts like this where people complain how it was no longer how it used to be, that some of the old great artists were never around anymore, or just that the general attitude in the community changed.  My favorite time to think back on is when I first joined Pixelation as well, but, that was 4-5 years ago and it'd be foolish to expect us to get anywhere near that again.  I actually like Pixelopolis a lot more compared to Pixelation in some of its stages, there were times when, yeah, we had all those people, but so many posts would fall off the first page without any replies.  And if you did get a reply it was only one or two of them and a lot of times they weren't very useful.  This place is so much more helpful and that doesn't happen nearly as much as often.

Im not sre i really see why this new forum would be a temp one.  granted its a bit short on active members, but thats because people are still finind out about it.  to make yet another forum would just confuse the issue, because it would require shifting everything.  I personally like the gray here, though perhaps some will disagree with me .... i likes me my blandness :P

this place i have to say is pretty sweet, but i think it lacks the number of real veteran pixellers that older communities had. that though is something that takes time, not a new forum.  A new orum is starting over, and what we have here is pretty good.

It's a pain in the ass, but the added features of a more customized forum software should be worth it.  It would be the same community, same site, just migrated.  We don't plan on running a new forum concurrently with this one, that'd be dumb :P

I've been a (sometimes silent) member of this community since the beginning, so I'm not too worried about another switch now.  Everyone always manages to find their way home.

Remember the 100 character rule? That was great.

All I remember was that Pixelation was the reason i even started pixeling, seeing all of those great works... It all just made me want to be a great pixeler.

Are you guys aware that our news box hasn't changed for months?

Yes.

My god I love you.  :)

Personally I always found pixelation very frightening, there were so many people, but above that;

Whenever I tried posting a new piece, it would just get 8 comments from people who were trying to get to 15 posts saying "lol daz great! ..........................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and not -one- post with critique in it,

I prefer pixelpolis, as it feels far less crowded than pixelation in it's final days.

I'm not sure I even understand where the "Pixelopolis is temp forum" angle is coming from.  What's wrong with this forum?  If it has anything to do with colors/header/layout that can easily be a "theme" thing that can be implemented here.

Why drag all the pixel people to another forum just so it can be called Pixelation? Seems rather pointless.

  It has nothing

To clear some things up:

1) The forum linked at the top of this post is in no way related to the improvements planned to Pixelation (obvious I know, just making sure).

2) Pixelopolis is a temp forum.  It has always been a temp forum, this is nothing new.

3) The old Pixelation had a couple issues with post quality and navigation that were exascerbated by having such a large userbase at the time; we planned on adding a few new features (post flagging/sorting, etc) that would smooth everything out if we ever saw that kind of traffic again.  (There are much fewer people around now, but the overall user quality is at a high we haven't seen for a while imo.  Hopefully the bandwagoneers, rippers, asspatters and me-tooers will be kept to a minimum through attentive modding :p)

4) Most people who talk about the "old days" are talking about the time around when they first joined.  Not only is this pretty inaccurate to what Pixelation really was like in the beginning, but it doesn't even matter anyway.  This isn't to sound snobby, it's just to say that these communities are an evolutionary thing; your "old days" are gone as are mine, and even if those circumstances came to be again, they'd be radically different from everyone else's perception of the "old days".  We can't try to stop the community from changing, doing so is what led the GDR to stagnate and die and Pixelation to spin off in its own direction in the first place.  What we can try to do is remain THE place for pixel c+c for the masses. To that end, we're going to build a bigger, better forum.  If that's not worth having to take the time to reregister your username on said new forum, well then, that's your call.

Remember the 100 character rule? That was great.

Yeah, funny you should reminisce about that since it was put in as a countermeasure to stem the flow of crappy, useless posts.  You don't want those days back do you? :p

Actually... I just miss the blue.

Also, the downward spiral Pixelation found itself in just before it met certain doom, was a little exciting for a new moderator like me. I got to lock threads and delete posts all over the place! I miss doing that!

But it's a relief to not have to do it constantly. This place is still really awesome, so far.

I just miss the blue.

That blue pixelation had was for masochists.
It was horrible (IMO), esp. when switching from it to a lighter (color wise) site, it would make me see in negative for a few secs.
("Maybe" it was useful to check if selout worked in dark bgs, but then some people also tried AAing the outlines so it would work on it, and I think that's awful.)
Anyway I'm kinda glad with the colors right now, my eyes thank it.

The colors here should be about 20 points darker, because that'd be a great neutral tone to check sprites against, but on the whole I prefer this to the pixelation blue, definately.

We're in what you might call alpha testing.  Pep and I are working on it.  We're both busy individuals with radically different schedules, so the going is slow.  Information will come as we commit to some of the changes we are planning and throw out some of the ones that won't work.  Not really much to tell at this point, but we don't plan on keeping you guys in the dark.

Man... its been so long since pixelation went down... I thought I had given up on games and art, guess not though.

By the way, don't flame, but I am 13th Angel / Dark Angel 13 / DA13.

What's up?? Been a long time...

Methinks it may not have been a good idea to tell us that ;-)  Naah, just kidding.  Welcome back, man.  Enjoy the forum.

Why make a new forum?  This place is okay.  As far as themes go, We should have a topic about what the people want.  Personally, I want a blue theme like the colour at the top in the buttons and bars.  IT looks good.  What is the point of having this as a temp forum when it is well set up to keep going?
Back from hiatus, just remembered how excellent this community is at forming technique in a fledgeling artist of any kind.
