crab2selout: Yeah, Mark Jones also posted on the PixelJoint forums a while back, which is how I found his work. Rubicon is what really stood out to me though. He also does work on Morrowind and made the graphics for Arkanoid, which isn't impressive graphic wise, but impressive and interesting because I loved playing that game when I was a lot younger.

Camus: I definitely agree about the beauty in Boktai backgrounds. What I really love is that blocky shading they use. I'm not sure how to explain it besides saying "blocky" or "fractured" look, but I'm sure everyone can understand what I mean since it's a hard look to miss. I love that game in general. Too bad I can't play it in winter, no sun and all.

You probably mean www.gfxzone.org. Their server seems to be down at the moment though.

My favorite game artists are Josh Astorian, Gustav Kilman, Paul Robertson, Jeremy Dower and (like Camus) whoever worked on the heavenly Boktai games.

I didn't notice arc the lad mentioned here, The first time I played that game the graphics stunned me, the animation is just beatiful.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any screenshots of it that don't horribly ruin the quality =\ [damn you, JPG]

Has anyone ever mentioned The Lion King for SNES backgrounds?

you know, those backgrounds are really cool, but I prefer the Earth worm Jim aproach because it's the same quality only it doesnt restrict level design at all.

All the artwork from Earthworm Jim 1/2 is definitely worthy of posting here.  Terrific character design on top of everything else.

I would post my favorite images here, but I don't want to offend an artist... the terrific desktop backgrounds made over at supertotto.com and bizarre scenes over at eboy.com really got me jazzed about pixel art. So creative and funny.

love his use of ambience

creative way how the character on the left is shaded.

Love the pallettes on these BoF sprites:

Random tilesets (most from SD2) found on my HD;

Now these are incredible LoM sprites:

Thats about all for now, these have been a massive inspiration to me, hope the're useful to you also.
