Favorite Pixel Art

on: March 07, 2006, 08:05:35 am
Post here pixel art that you've dug enough to save to your computer.  I don't mean this to be an butt-kissing thread, just a resource spot for people to post art for people who may not have seen them.  I'm mostly doing this for selfish reasons, as all the art that I had saved from days gone by got wiped from my computer a few years ago (including all of mine (though I don't by many means expect anyone to have art by varken on their computer, but I would love you to no end if you did, heh)) and I'm mostly hoping to see a lot of art from people that aren't around anymore, but just post your favorites.  I guess I'll get the ball rolling, although I unfortunately only have mostly more recent stuff or stuff you could find pretty easily.

By xenodragon.  I can't for the life of me remember where I found this.

By Jeremy Dower.  Found it at his website: www.jeremydower.com

The only real oldie I think I have on my computer.  By Z Gravity.  If anyone has the jump animation he did with that guy with the big asian style hat who was wrapped in bandages, I'd be really interested in seeing that again.

Yep, Henk Nieborg is truly a master. This thread has a lot of potential, it's going to be a great resource when you want to study other peoples art. I could probably post several hundred pictures but I've chosed two wich I like very much. They were both made about 10-15 years ago in typical demoscene style. You could probably argue about the colour count. Both pictures could use much more optimized palletes if the artist wanted to but since the limitations of the computers at that time was 256 colours (they were made on Amiga 1200 I think) the artist never bothered to reduce the colour count.

A pic by RA from the old demoscene group Sanity:

Both images is best viewed with 2x zoom

Not touching RA, but sadly the Cougar pic is partly a copy from a dungeons and dragons cover painting.

Didn't know about that Helm, it's kinda disappointing. I haven't been able to find that cover art your talking about though. Even though it's not his own idea I think he have done a great job pixeling it.

He sure did. Cougar is very good, although his stuff is a bit too antialiased. But I wouldn't want to be the one to say that one of my favourite pixel art pieces is a copy...

Edit: I did some googling, at first I remembered it being elmore, but I checked his online gallery and no such pic exists. I googled 'red dragon' and actually browsed the first 20 pages or so, it's bt the same artist as this

i'm pretty certain, but I certainly can't make out the signature

I'm sure I didn't dream this, Cougar has copied the dragon from somewhere. The rest is his, but the dragon head is from somewhere.

If he just copied the head, then he did a damn well job with the composition of the picture. I love the way everything blends together and the details inside the cave. But as you say he tend to use too much antialiasing. http://www.kameli.net/nocopy is a site with lots of demoscene pictures that have been proven to be copies of other artists works. It's funny to see that so many pictures were just copies of Boris Vallejo paintings. I couldn't find this D&D picture though. Maybe we should get back to the topic now.

@Darien: Lol I can't believe one of my pics made it into this thread XD. That giant-slam animation is mine, from http://www.crystaltechstudios.com.

@helm, the artist you're looking for with TSR dragon pics is probably Todd Lockwood. Not sure if that specific pic is in his gallery though.
http://www.toddlockwood.com

Also the reason why I switched from xenodrogen to dhaos, is that some of my german friends...well had alot of fun with my screen name lol >.< Apparently 'drogen' means drugs in german. I had originally based it off of a town in the breath of fire series however...

As far as my favorite pixel pieces... the monsters and bosses (2d ones that is) from breath of fire 3 and 4 take the cake. Sadly the sites that host these sprites are all like...down right now U______U I'd upload some but my storage is getting too low *cries*

Of course he did it. He just shouldn't be claiming it's pixel art. That's index painting, with no regard to proper color usage, conservation, or anything of the type. He basically uses dpaint like a lame photoshop with 256 colours instead of 17 million colours.

Chaos Engine - intro

Speedball 2 - loser and winnerpics

Acording to Mobygames Dan Malone did the art for both of these games.

Chaos engine was very funny game with two players.
The Bitmap brothers style use much dithering,
but looks great

Btw.
Found these two Speedball Pictures on Gfxzone
and they say mark coleman.

I think we can trust HOL on this one. You can clearly see a difference in style between the games Dan Malone made and the games Mark Coleman made. Chaos engine for example doesn't look at all like Xenon 2. Bitmap brothers was an amazing game company. The Chaos Engine was a fantastic game and the graphics were great.

Yes you're right ptoing, it IS indeed a great game. In fact I played it only a couple of days ago. It's probably one of the best 2-player games on the Amiga (except for Rodland).

When we are already into Amiga games, I really like to post some screens from the game Cruise for a Corpse by Delphine Software. Those french guys really knew how to push pixels. The scenes are just so stylish and the vector animations are so smooth. It's a pity that the game's plot was so linear. I couldn't decide wich scrren to post so I just post a link to the Hall of Light entry: http://hol.abime.net/3134/screenshot

(except for Rodland).

Never much liked Rodland... Was pretty but I found the gameplay mechanics lacking.  Parasol Stars and Qwak were far better in the single screen 2 player platformer genre.  Mainly cos there was plenty of backstabbing potential in them...

Again while we're on the subject of Amiga graphics I gotta mention the color usage in Ruff N Tumble always impressed me.  When I saw previews back then I thought it was for the AGA Amigas only but nope it ran on the ECS machines.  32 colors per screen and makes me wonder if we really ever needed the millions of colors on screen later machines are capable of.  The actual sprites are chunky and very well animated, meaty explosions, decent sized bosses.  Good music too.

You know the backgrounds are made from vectors containing either pure colour or dithering between two ega shades? It's not real pixelling (in the sense that Out of this World isn't pixelled either) and that makes it even more awesome because it' s more difficult. Huge balls that artist had.

All the animations/sprites from Flashback, Heart of darkness, and Z (which I think is also a bitmap brothers creation).

The great thing about Flashback are it's tilesets, not the animations, so much. Sure, they're smooth a a recently dead teenage girl's bottom, but they're rotoscope-based, which is CHEATING LOL but the tilesets... the tilesets!!

Flashback comes back from a time ( like the bitmap brothers games) when Art Direction was existing in computer games, and besides trying to mirror reality, studios went 'how can he make this distinctive and stylish?'

There is still artdirection in games, good one too (mostly in japanese games). Most american ones dont have very good art direction tho.

Chamber of the Sci-Mutant Priestess was balls-out awesome, but the graphics for the different rooms varied in quality, kinda like in It Came from the Desert.  Some rooms look like they were pieced together by two or more artists who had no idea what the other was doing :x

Most of the stuff from Batman for NES.  Not like it's spectacular art, I just love how they choked all the detail out of it by using tons and tons of black.

Demon's Crest, SNES.

Oh yeah Demon's Crest definately. That screenshot doesn't do it justice at all.

And the NES batman is hilarious and awesome. Hilarious because it's CLEARLY not a batman game, but I guess the developers scored batman rights and put the caped hero in, minor gameplay alterations. Bats fights mostly robots and stuff in this, the levels have nothing to do with the comics or movie, and jocker is hilariously tacked on at the end as well. Awesome because it's the best animated/looking game on the NES. A joy to behold, I urge anyone to try it. Hellishly difficult, too.

Yup I always bring up Batman when a NES graphics discussion starts up on places.  Had me the cartridge about 6 months after it came out (got £20 knocked off the price too).  Just fell in love with the whole look of that game (rich colors amongst the atmospheric use of black and the Batmobile cutscenes just amazed me, especially seeing the lil machine guns appear and the Batmobile drive and sorta skid as it stopped).  Was one of the games that really got me into pixel art.  Great gameplay and fantastic music too.  But yeah, Helm, as ya say it ain't a really a Batman game at all.  Who cares though...

I was only refering to the shadow creatures in Heart of Darkness, though. I loved those things.

Camus, that's from the first level of Earthworm Jim 1(SNES, maybe Genesis, too).

I really like these two pieces by Alex Handon-White
http://finalredemption.com/media/pixel/pixelpiece35.htm This one of the guy rescuing the girl from Hell(Don't know what the actual subject is, but I'm always thinking of some greek myth where a guy is rescuing a girl from Hades when I look at this)

http://finalredemption.com/media/pixel/pixelpiece36.htm And this here is one of my favourite pixel trees.

I love the shading on the bells in that batman pic with joker. The palette swap on the left bell was pulled off spectacularly

that couldnt be more straight. we should go harrass some ripper at sprite database to get em or something XD

Luckily map rips are becoming more and more common. there's VG maps which is completly devoted to that, and there's EmuGif that is starting to do some real kickass layered rips of SNK figther and even  Mslug

I think somewhere deep within my HardDrive I have a map of the underwater level but it's not real size

Camus, my favourite non-game art pixel pieces are by Lazur and Cyclone, as one would expect. Specifically, I love the series of sea paintings by Lazur, as well as his elmore rip with the girl by the river stream that is BETTER than the original. Cyclone, I love all his stuff, but my favourite would probably be the deep-sea fish.

Mermaid's pirate pc for C64 forever remains one of my absolute favourites too.

I would link to all of those, but gfxzone is down.

To those of you that link to pixelation artist pics, no offense, but investigate the medium, outside this forum. There's people that have reached incredible heights with the artform, 5, 10 years before st0ven or Kon decided to pick up a pixel brush.

there's that EWJ map I mentioned. it's funny how EWJ can only look as bland as a screnshot from any other game when it's a zoomed out map.

In my oppinion EWJ tiling surpasses Mslug not because of beauty, but because it looks truly seamless and gridless whitout restricting level design in the least.

Mslug levels are usually of a set structure while EWJ levels are all over the place with all sort of crazy platforming.

I'm serious about getting these levels ripped. we have to organize and colaborate to get this done because it'd seriously benefit anyone doing any high-end 2-d game.

I bet a bunch of us have the rom, how about one screenshot every post? we can start with the first screen in EJW1 then the next person to post posts the next, and the next and the next, until we have atleast the first EWJ level ripped?

Helm. I think I may have some from those two.

I love cyclone too
(thumbnail links)
specially this Wolverine looking guy

but I barely remember Lazur.

Demoscene stuff, although impressive, isn't very interesting in my opinion. It's always felt cold and distant to me. Sure it's neat to see near photo quality pixels and all, but they don't hold my attention. I prefer a simpler, cleaner look in pixel art. Especially when they have bold colors that harmonize well.
Riva:

Morganne:

Ndeal:

And a couple from Rubicon, I think it was called, Mark Jones was the artist if I remember correctly. Also two from the D&D arcade game.

I don't think the Cyclone stuff above is photorealistic at all. The Riva pic you posted is totally demoscene inspired too, but sure, to each his own. I adore the Rubicon art you posted, and Ndeal used to be very good, dunno what he's doing now as far as pixels are concerned.

These 2 cyclone pics are c64 interlaced FLI images and they look NOTHING like this on a real c64. They were wrongly converted which added the dither.

http://noname.c64.org/csdb/scener/?id=18
Go to there and download the zip files for
"Die donnernde Kataun" and "Batman braet Fische".
They should include d64 or prg files which you can run in a c64 emulator. For optimal interlace emulation i suggest CSS64 but try to get the pepto palette for it as the normal CSS64 palette is an abomination.

X-Man is pretty awesome

even tho it's mostly a copy it is fucking ace. Just look at the texture/detail on the face espacially.

2 16 colour pics that are just awesome

And this one by Cyclone. It's on GFXzone but with the wrong aspect ratio. I a 100% sure it's a hires 16 colour amiga pic in which case it has to be vertically stretched.

Personally i prefer X-man's approach to pixelling. Cyclone's, while being pretty as a whole (design, colors, etc), looks too blurry, kind of like color reduced digital illustration. On the other hand, X-man's has what i like best about pixelart: the definition (and such definition! the textures!). You can't color reduce into THAT!

An example of gameart i thought was great at the time was Sega's Story of Thor:

(not the best picture, but couldn't find any better).

This thread is great, learning lots of stuff here, this should definitely become a sticky.

I love the way boktai backgrounds are done too.

not really for the perspective, I'm not that technical with my preferences, what I enjoy is that quite flat basic design

that gets really epic when needed whitout excessive details.

these two specially amazed me, because with the fog they replaced the  usal horizon to give it a feel of distance and ambience I wouldnt have expected from the first scenes

it's really clever how well this water blends into the rest whitout requiring alphablending

Darkmere and Dragonstone also happen to have some pretty nice gfx.

I liked Story of Thor (yeah, it's the same as Beyond Oasis) in motion a lot. In still shots it's pretty clear the tileage is minimally done. The cutscenes were boss too. Nice game.

X-man is a very good technician, but I just can't deal with copiers. The idea annoys the hell out of me.

crab2selout: Yeah, Mark Jones also posted on the PixelJoint forums a while back, which is how I found his work. Rubicon is what really stood out to me though. He also does work on Morrowind and made the graphics for Arkanoid, which isn't impressive graphic wise, but impressive and interesting because I loved playing that game when I was a lot younger.

Camus: I definitely agree about the beauty in Boktai backgrounds. What I really love is that blocky shading they use. I'm not sure how to explain it besides saying "blocky" or "fractured" look, but I'm sure everyone can understand what I mean since it's a hard look to miss. I love that game in general. Too bad I can't play it in winter, no sun and all.

All the artwork from Earthworm Jim 1/2 is definitely worthy of posting here.  Terrific character design on top of everything else.

I would post my favorite images here, but I don't want to offend an artist... the terrific desktop backgrounds made over at supertotto.com and bizarre scenes over at eboy.com really got me jazzed about pixel art. So creative and funny.

For a competition on Tip.it, made by The Jeppoz(or whatever)
The color amount was out the window, in the hundreds, but it was one of the first pixel pictures I saw that looked realistic.
Googled it and found his gallery but not the picture I'm talking about though.

I also like Prowler, while he has a very conservative style theme- and colourpalette-wise, he's putting an insane amount of detail in his pics, plus they're rather large. I had the honor to meet him this year at Breakpoint, and he showed me most of the steps for this pic (he had saved more than a 100), that was really interesting :)
