[WIP] T-Rex Portrait

on: September 18, 2009, 09:38:24 am
Hey, everyone! Long time no see....

Before I push these pixels any further, I was hoping I could find some help getting it to look (for the most part) like an anatomically correct T-Rex. The snout especially is giving me trouble...

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. ^^

Hey there. I checked this before I read the title and had to check the title before I knew what I was seeing. I thought it was an orc or something. Drawing a foreshortened T-rex head will be difficult to do and retain readability.
Straight-on is way too prone to boredome dude, go for an angled shot. You'll get to convey his character much better - you'll get to see that elongated head and mouth full of teeth, etc. Straight-on also facilitates cheap symmetry.

@Quake: The hue-shifting sounds nice! Don't worry, these colors aren't final. I agree, it's too much of a straight ramp now... Thanks! :)

@Mathia: Sorry, can't go for an angled shot. This portrait is an asset for a game which requires it to face the player head-on. It will be difficult, but I already figured that out on my own. Thanks. ;)

It's good to specify all required criteria in the original so we crit throwers can throw accurately.

Looking at your interpretation of a T-rex head straight-on, I just know it's wrong, but I can't exactly imagine how to better so I dug up some reference. Isn't that what we usually do? Behold the bountiful results of my T-rexasaurus Google image search:

The palette is a bit messy, there are a few colors you only use once or twice. You can or choose to use 'm everywhere, or choose to delete 'm. I did a combination of both, and tried to overdo everything.
I started with this because I thought you used a too bright color on the top of the head. if you would have done it a bit less bright, you could have used another color for highlights, but keep the amount of highlights little.

Anyway, I started putting in more dark and bright areas, edited your palette a lot, and got here.

   yours >>>>  mine

Oops, somehow the transparancy got lost!?
creatively fixed!

Update:

I think he looks a lot more like a T-Rex now, but I'm still having difficulty shaping the bridge of the nose and top part of the head....

On another note: I originally drew the teeth lined up inside the character's mouth to anthropomorphize him to an extent, but now I'm starting to feel like teeth hanging outside the mouth is too crucial a trademark of a T-Rex to forgo. Thoughts?

I dont think you put as much attention to the volume as you should. To me the detail on the upper part looks overdone and makes it flat. I mean it looks more like a mask with bumps than having the real form of a head.
