Where can I find a good tileset tutorial?

on: August 21, 2009, 12:26:43 am
I just started learning pixel art and figured I'd start out by making some terrain tiles. I did the easy ones like grass, water, and forests but I'm stuck on mountains. I'm going for a top down view and want to make mountain ranges like in the final fantasy games using tiles. Are there any good tutorials out there for this because I couldn't find one.

You can click a link on the bottom to go to the next page. It's about 6 pages long or so. Covers water, grass, sand, etc.

Oh, btw, does anyone know where to find Tsugumo's tutorials beyond part 11? I know he added two chapters later on, but none of the mirrors have them. There was at least the one on lighting.

Hello! I remember I found his extended tutorial somewhere else as well.

http://www.geocities.com/skulkraken2002/Tsugumo/chapter6.htm

He has no linking, but see the 1 up there? Just type in the chapter number you want to see and it will load. It goes all the way up to chapter15.

All the way to the bottom, you'll see categories... or if you want just go click on the previous posts.

I don't think that's a very good site to learn from. Especially for a person with a tutorial mindset. I'm talking about the - "I don't know how to do draw this (rock, grass, tree) so I will look for a tutorial on it how to draw it" instead of the more fruitful approach of learning from sources which will help your overall skill set holistically.

Here's a few from pixelzone.

http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/shtml/tutorials.shtml

All the links should work. I'm just a little worried because they didn't before. Though that was quite a while ago.

Also, the site that Antifarea posted has links to several other pixel art tutorial areas. Those links for that page are in it's right hand navigagion.

Really love the site tutorial. I wish someone translates it in English

Google translator seems to help somewhat but yeah it could use an official translation.

Yeah, I kinda worried about that actually. It helps some people get into it in the first place by seeing the methods other use to do a particular object, but yeah it then ends up being "copy this" instead of learning how you'd draw it on your own. Mostly I just do these for fun (Had a lot of free time back when I started this) or when someone asks me, but yeah I want to improve it as well because I kinda had a feeling that would pop up sooner or later. I'll definitely give it some thought, there are subjects I know that could be good to put on there that aren't just step by step things.
Anyway, thank you for this post and I'll think on it and see if I can get any other helpful suggestions for it. :3
