[WIP] Human Skull

on: August 14, 2009, 08:19:34 am
This started off as an attempt at a decent human face but i was running into way too many issues. I realized that if I wanted to be able to pull *that* off, I'd have to develop a better understanding of what's...beneath the skin.

Don't ask about the little beady red eyedots. They're not really part of the peice.
I will get to some AA and actual coloring once the line art and shading are as done as my skill permits, so comments about those two things would be premature.

Main things I'm having *really* major problems with; the jawbone and teeth (upper and lower.).. and call me pessimisitc, but i don't think i'm going to be able to fit a full set of teeth on the fella. Probably wrong about that. Just seems rather daunting a task.

It's looking pretty nice so far.
The biggest problem I'm seeing here is that it isn't anatomically correct.
I don't know if you have used any references. If you didn't: You should.
Here's a few pictures you could use:

Another problem is that you're not using enough colours to really define the forms in the skull.
It appears rather flat now because you simply haven't added enough contrast. I used 2 more shades in this edit to demonstrate what I mean:

[I also played with the lighting from the eyes a bit, hehe]

I think I fixed most annatomical issues here, and fixed the volume problems you had going on.

quick note since i'm drawing a skull now for a different thread -

in the interest of closer accuracy, the shape of the eye socket generally slopes down towards the outside of the face, and the jaw bone is tallest at it's point, right below the front teeth, distinguishing human skulls from barrel-mouthed gorillas and chimps.

A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

Yeah, I have been using references, I'm still working at *interpreting* them correctly, however.

Just to show the progress report:

-Current. Attempt at addressing anatomy issues, and flatness...
And the teefs.
I'm not sure which one looks better, this or the last one
Morez.
