Star Maker

on: July 27, 2009, 03:06:48 am
Hey! This would be my first time posting my artwork for critique!

This peice is one that was started for a contest, 50 x 50 of a 'character' and only 4 colors may be used. I chose something similar to Game Boy colors.
My entry was this. Her hair was inspired by Nia from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

After the contest was finished I started to expand on this piece further. I'm not "stuck' per-say as I like what I have, but I would like to see another point of view for things that could be fixed, done better, or added.

Okay, first off, it's lacking a bit of contrast around the hair. You seem to know what your doing here, so I'll leave how you do that up to you. But you also have a problem with your light sources. If it's supposed to be a palette based off the GB, then you might have a little limitation. But first off is I notice that the light source from the top left isn't shadowed quite right. The skirt for example is shaded in the wrong place I think. Or it might just be a good idea to go with a clean style. First off the dithering on the hairs tail needs to go. Since that's a star(?) it means it's also a light source as well right? The count of fingers and toes only matters fi we can see them. Right now, especially the arm below the head, seems way too small. Maybe make that a little bit bigger. I also just noticed the legs. Maybe want to adjust them a little bit to make them more visible. Also, the glowing sphere she's holding. That's a light source as well right? Make sure it shines on her face and that little hair piece as well. Good luck with this!

PUT THE SHADOW BACKGROUNT INSTEAD OF WHITE *pant, pant*
Or teh dithering will look awful, and unavailable... =/
At first I thought it was about that old SNES game, Princess Star Maker xD Anyways, i find the hair quite odd and.. Unhair-like. That's all i can say, but remember to put up the shadow background. I am really liking this, these themes are always my favorites.

I did a edit to show you some things i would change.

The first thing i did was throw the pic into color so i could get the hair to
look right and i looked up some ref photos.
Notice how i removed the dark shades from the hair and only used
them a little bit.
In the ref pics i was looking at most of Nia's hair is defined using color
difference and not Depth.
So drawing it in color helps a lot.
Then when i got the hair to match the ref pic I removed the color
and replaced it with the gameboy style colors.
As you can tell i re did the gameboy colors you were using to
have more and even contrast.

I hope that helps you out.

It's not actually Nia or meant to be an exact likeness to her hair, but I was just inspired by the swirls and the general fluffyness of her hair.
I'll see if I can take most of the comments into consideration while I work on the update.

Oh yes, xhunterko what do you mean by a clean style?
And JosephSeraph I don't understand what you mean by the shadow background?

It's just something that I use to designate games to myself. What I mean by a game with clean graphics is that there's no difficulty intelling where things are, the same style is used all throughout, consistency, and yadda yadda criteria. Think of something like, the new A boy and his blob, or something like oh, Kirby, Cavestory, and some other ones I can't name right now. But it's very readable and and not too realistic. Don't worry about it though. It's just something that I use.
