Not just the neon signs. I wouldn't mind if exactly everything in the city background was a little darker. It's supposed to be night, after all, and it doesn't look that much darker than in the daytime forest shot.

Nice city scape tiny, however the lights on the buildings seem rather bright, they could confuse the player with any projectiles fired unless all projectiles are all 2-3px thick ^^U.

Cityscape suggestions:

a) Make the city (much) darker and make sure that the lights aren't a color that's similar to player/enemy projectiles.
b) Make the city seem slightly out of focus and put more emphasis on the cloud cover by making the clouds more detailed and (duh) in focus.

Other than that, everything looks awesome. Keep it up.
