iso london (now with even more pixel goodness!)

on: February 12, 2006, 11:55:48 am
**thread updated as I go, newer images towards the bottom of the page**

This is an ongoing project to help kids with safety in London. The website ( http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/initiatives-projects/education/default.asp) is for teachers to instruct in classrooms.

Neat stuff, though it lacks consistency of style in a couple of spots. Like in the greenish-gray waterfront area  I see that you've shaded in a typical isometric manner by making one of the edges a bright highlight and using strong outlines. If you look at the building in the top left corner, it's like you decided to change your mind and forgot about having complete border outlines and got rid of the highlighted edge. Then if we move to the water and look at the boat we see something even more different in style than the rest of the image. You've shifted in style once more and completely removed the outlined look, and gone with a simpler midtones+shadows style of shading describing the shape without any help from lineart.

Actually, the boat is probably my favourite part of the entire iamge. If it wasn't too time consuming to do compared to the usually style, it'd be pretty cool to see your next city in the style of the boat. I also like that you weren't too afraid the mix up the angles here, adds a lot to see the trains bending more gradually and makes the streets more interesting to look at.

Hiya, thanks for the comments.

You're totally right, I didn't notice about the boat. The boat was one of the first items I drew and I didn't have much reference to go by. I shall revisit that part of the map. The School isn't highlighted on the corners, I think at the time I either thought that asphalt wouldn't have highlights or I just forgot.

On the link above, you can roll over the different transport modes (which put outlines on everything). Currently I am working on the screens for when you click;

Do you have to save as a jpeg? It really damages the quality and clarity of the image.
Other than that, the town looks great. Very nice. I especially like the boat, heh.

It doesn't really damage the work in any way...
it just makes the filesize larger, makes it load longer, and... uh... stuff.

I don't see how JPeggin' it would watermark it (and aside from that, don't worry, I'm not out to steal your work. :D).
Everything looks so...
...
Brand spankin' new. What is London but, uh... centuries of years old? ???

(crazy asian gamer: london is kinda grimey and dirty, but the underground is slowly being renovated. Meter for meter, it's the most expensive railway in the world. One trip on the jubilee line can show one that.)

Possibly the hardest thing about this project is that everything has be "spot on" to the real life objects, unfortunately theres no room to make things up or cut corners to speed up the process. I guess that's why the platform looks kinda dull, heh. Once I get some people milling around, it'll fill that scene up. ;D

Images are working again now, moving servers.

Thankfully, adobe have left "stroke path" in photoshop, which makes curvy new taxis a whole lot easier to build. I think if I went down the boxy "eboy" route, it would have been taking too many liberties with the IP of what taxis are actually meant to look like... although it would have been a darn sight quicker to make!

The south-walk looks fine, but in the east walk, the background arm appears to be travelling a much longer difference than the foreground arm, a couple of pixels to long. The car-steps was really nice to look at it. Reminds me of those shows that explain how various machines are built. As for the rest of the city, it looks pretty cool. Looks like a very large project.
