Anyone know what new armor is in Fable lost chapters?  I beat the entire thing yet I only found 2 new helmets...  Is this all?  Chicken hat and Red wig I don't consider armor. What else is there and how do I get it?

the non 150x150 ness of it makes me a sad panda :(

A blinking test-pattern "LOL?" OMG!  Why don't you just make the same image at a reduced size?  Since everything is made of straight lines, it should be a piece o' cake...

Speaking of cake..happy belated birthday to Pep...mine was just over two weeks ago, and the cake was delish...glad yours was too!

If things are really that slow, then I would make a personal request to visit the Wiki:

http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/pixipedia

The more viewership the Wiki gets, the more it grows. Knowing is half the battle!!! Share your knowledge, improve on what's there!

Thanks Nvision. Happy belated to you as well!

Might be a bit of a dry subject for some, but I wanted to inform everyone that we've been looking into the current forum structure and will be doing some rule updates. Hopefully nothing that will shock you or blow your world away. :)

I found an error in that tut, in Demystifying the Greats 1

"
Now here's a sphere with a light shining on it. You can instantly tell there's light shining on the top right of it because that side is lighter, and the other side is of course, darker. It FEELS 3d, even though it's still just pixels like anything else we've been looking at...."

While it says top right I can clearly see top left.  Not much of a problem but hey, I'm just pointing it out.

I swear, I was just about to make a post about EarthBound3 or at least I was thinking about it. It should be pretty interesting, although I hope the really long delays and cancellations aren't a bad omen.

Well didn't they say that they can no longer change the date?  And besides, long delays just mean they're making sure they won't mess it up... right?

In any case, I was really pleased with the screenshots.  I just hope they translate it.  Though, we could always rely on ROM hacking...

So i've taken to playing cave story again, where i left off after a single playthrough >,>

It seems fun.
I'm doing it because a bunch of buddies of mine, who really enjoyed the game... we're talking people who do speed runs on the secret boss of hell >_>
are planning on using some of the rom hacking tooms (sue's workshop, a level editor) and some plain old file-hacking to try to put together some sort of prequel in their spare time.

Just thought some fans of cave-story might want to hear about an unofficial prequel currently in planning and conceptualizing stages.
and i made the mistake of telling them someone here might volunteer to help with graphics :P

i'll keep anyone who cares posted through PMs :-)

If there's anything more cave-story-ish, I'd prefer it to be by the original developer. Make an original platformer by scratch is what I suggest to your friends.

It's a fan appreciation dealy.

Right now they're just discussing their own ideas that come from cannon storyline
Not sure whether i mentioned it above :P but they want it to be a prequel where you control Curly.

Though yeah, it would be cool if they got Pixel to make a new one or coded one themselves, they're fans of the game who are stuggling through the game's strange form of basic at the moment. If they can learn enough without being forced to create a new engine, that's the route they want to take.

edit; holy spelling, batman!
they contacted the man responsible for translating the game, in hopes he can shed some light on the file formats and the language used.

Does anybody know anything about "Trillian" messenger? I just got it, and thought it was pretty cool (mainly because of the skinnability xP), but I was wondering if anyone knew how to use the IRC client that it comes with. Do you need a seperate IRC program to use it? Because everything I type comes up with "YOu are not in a channel!", or seomthign of the sort...

HuzzaaA?!! I'm back!!

After a year or more thinking that the Pixelation community was broken down, I visited Final Redemption and went to the links page and saw that ..- it moved to a new board. Hell?! I missed all the news?!  ??? No one told me?  ::)

But anyway, I'm glad I'm back. I was JointJunkie by the way, the one with the crazy joint avatar and put everyone elses avatar on fire. haha.. That was a good pixelling time.. But I'm retired as a pixel artist now. I think I can make a piece or join a compo on occasion, I just won't have enough time to do real pixelling anymore. And I lost all my previous work..  :-\

But oorah! I'm back, and that's all that matters!!  :-*

Oi, Helm...I noticed in another thread you mentioned that you do comic work for a living...  Are you a penciller, inker, writer, ???  If you've got any of your work available online, I'd love to check it out.  I used to self-publish my own books, before I got into making games, but I'm trying to get back into the swing of things in my spare time.  Seeing other's work would certainly be a great source of inspiration...

Yeah I do comics for a living. I write, pencil, ink and occasionally colour my work. Check the pixelation OT creativity thread, or just click on links. The few on the last page of the OT thread are translated too, though.

Amazing work, Helm!  Man, I was totally taken aback by those...the style reminds me very much of work I used to read in Heavy Metal (back when it was good).  I especially like the "wheel" pic (nice non-linear narrative), and the cable workers one. What publisher do you work with, and do they happen to ship overseas?  I'd love to pick up some of your books...

Thanks for checking out my work, glad you like. My influences are more european than american, and Heavy Metal (well, Metal Hurlant, really) with stuff like Moebius, Pazienza, Kaza etc are pretty much 50% of my aesthetic style.

I haven't published any books, my one-pagers run in a weekly greek newspaper. I plan to collect and publish my first volume of assorted at about 5 months.

NEW AVATAR! :D

please sign up to kill me below:

ah I finally remembered what your avatar reminds me of:  the stay puft Marshmellow Man from Ghostbusters.  It would be cool if you tried to do something more radically different with the colors/style of the Cave Story guy, though.  Right now it's just kinda, "oh, robots can gain weight?"

the drawn back-grounds,
it looked promising.

My F-Zero rip-off? You know, I'm actually honored that it's still in someone's memory. I'll tell you what happened: School happened, then I got bored with it, then I decided the enormous amount of time spent on making every track so isn't worth it.

If I could somehow magically create a non-tile based level editor that still has the stability of a tile based one, I'd continue making tracks for it. No, really, I would. I actually found the old .gam file on my HD and played it just last week. It's.. much harder than I remembered...

I was pleasantly surprised by this video of the DS zelda. I like the way it fuses the top down view from the 2d version with the cinematics of the 3d versions. This plus Mario & Luigi 2 and the new super mario bros just might actually get me to buy a DS.

Eventhough the new Zelda for NDS doesn't really make use of pixel art, the graphics are AWESOMEOUS!! Just look at how beautiful low-poly can be. The animations look great and the game seems to be more energetic than its big brothers on the TV consoles.

I bought M&Lpit a while ago and its a fine game, although i think of it as a step down from the first one. my main problem is with mario and luigi's sprites, these mustve been the first ones they did because they just look really awkward in this game, mario runs like a retard also when hes not carrying baby mario and both mario and luigi look like theve been smacked in the face in their diagonal down sprites..
also theres no overworld, its just like lots of dungeons which has really dissappointed me. but its still a great game but i cant understand why they didnt use or build from the first M&L's sprites and include a real overworld

I would love to just make fake mock ups and easter eggs for games and post them everywhere. "OMG I PRESD UP DWN UP DWN LEFT RITE LEFT RIYT WILE PLAYN TONYHAWKZ 10 N IT WENT 2 A MINI-GAME!!" And then it'd be a picture of picture of Tony Hawk going through a Contra level and everyone would be like "omg w/e" and then I'd post more pictures of it and then they'd be like "... hmm..." then I'd recruit someone else to post one of the pictures and then everyone would be like "If two people got it to work, IT MUST BE TRUE."

Creating hoaxes would be the best job in the world. I might have to go apply for a journalism gig at the Enquirer now.

I'm graduating in June and attending Savannah College of Art and Design in the fall. I can't be the only one graduating ...  ???

SCAD is a badass school, if for some reason I feel masochistic enough to pursue my MFA, that's high on my list of places to get it

just don't fall into the trap most art students do when they're fresh out of high school :P I swear every semester we lose about half of our 18 year old fresh enrollments and it really sucks to watch because it's the best thing that's ever happened to me, and I just want to see everyone make it because we're all in the same boat :( I highly doubt you'll have that issue though, those guys are just slackers and critique-sensitive pussies

Is there anyone graduating this year? I don't here about too many people and their completion of post-secondary school/college.
I will be graduating, if I finish this correspondence course before Friday. Yes, this Friday. I have to turn in all the written work (little of it is done  :'() and I will have to pass every class. If I pass all my classes this year, that'll be a personal best. It's sad, really.

If I do graduate this year, I will either join the Navy or go to college at UAF. I'm not sure yet. I personally think the Navy is better in that it'll put my life on track straight out of high school, but the people whose thoughts on the subject I care about most are saying to go stay here. If I do stay, I don't know what I'll be doing. Which kind of irks me.

I prefer to worry about my correspondence course presently. If I don't get that done, then there's no use to be thinking ahead just yet. Even if I don't finish it by Friday, I still have until August before it expires so I'll definitely graduate (assuming I pass all my other classes), but I won't walk at the ceremony is all.

I'm gonna need the words of some tech people here. After half a year of puzzledness, I found out what's wrong with my computer, what makes it overheat when I play certain games. The fan that sits on the actual graphics card itself is completely and utterly pulverized. (And I didn't even know I had a fan there! Why won't anyone ever tell me about these things?!)

Apparently it's a little 40mm fan with a two-pin connector thingy, sitting on an ATI Radeon X600/550 thingy. So, does anyone have any advice on what fan to buy, and.. how to freaking get the old one out of the way, 'cause it's kinda stuck there.  x.x

[edit] Kay. Radeon X600 Pro is what I'm looking at here. I've got a few options... The only thing confusing me still is that every dang fan I've seen has a connector (that's what they're called right?) with four wires/pins... mine's got two. Is there... um... something to do about that? [/edit]

I'm sure someone out there knows of a website that explains the limitations of the DS (as far as restrictions on tiles, palette rows, etc.)
I can find nothing. I'm used to GBA stuff, but I'm sure the DS is a different beast altogether.

The DS has 2 processors and one is a bit better than the gba and one actually a bit worse for whatever reason.

If you are in 2D mode the restrictions are basically the same as on the gba but you can have an extended palette where you have 16 256 colour palettes for sprites instead of just one but that's not really efficient in terms of visual ram. Another problem is that the screen is bigger on the DS. On the gba you could have a background that tiles and is 256 pixles wide so you are always 16 pixles ahead or you have a buffer of 8 pixels on both sides left and right. On the DS that's not possible so scrolling in 2D is actually more expensive afaik.

Also the 3d capabilities are a bit crap. you can only have 2000 visible polygons per frame which is not much and the alpha stuff is meh.

BUT if you use 3D for 2D that's rocking. in 2D mode you can only have 128 sprites i think (maybe 256 not sure) and only 32 rotating/scaling ones. In 3d however you can just map a texture  on a quad and treat it as a sprite, works with animation as well and you get free rotation and scaling one 2000 sprites in theory. Same goes for backgrounds, just make them in 3d and intead of 4 backgrounds you can have 8 (there can't be more than 8 visible polygons on top of each other until the z-sorting fucks up)

Yeh, i could gather more knowledge if anyone is interessted.

Pretty please.

I'm actually attempting some background art for the system, and I'm used to the GBA. What I have so far looks okay, but still very GBA, and I know that the DS can handle more than that.

Basically when if you wanna make a PURE 2d look game you should use the 3d capabilities of the DS, it's way more powerful. I am quite sure that everything in advance wars ds is based on texturemapped quads. I will look up some more info. Do you have MSN monsoon?

2000 polygons, you mean triangles? If so, that would make 1000 quads (quad = 2tri).

I wonder why Nintendo would've put 2D mode in the DS if all peopel would use is 3D mode. Wonder-wonder..

Oh, I came across this really cool little movie short film type thing. It was like a documentary about aliens who had come to inhabit the earth and there were mechs going around and stuff. The aliens looked kind of cthulu-like, if I recall, and there were UFO's all over the city. The people were all like: GTF out!!!11!1 And the aliens were all like: We don't wanna be here!!1!!!111 Well, it was pretty cool, and I can't find it any more 'cause that's all I remember about it. Anyone know what I'm talking about or who made it?

No, the programs don't use much memory.  Object Dock is using 1,464 K of my memory, and Windows Blinds uses 1,540 K, according to the task manager.  Both of these can be gotten from www.stardock.com.  Keep in mind that these are technically trial versions, although there is not much of a difference between the trial and full version.  In Object Dock, the main benefit of the full version is the ability to have tabbed docks, which is nice to keep organized.  The only difference I've seen between the trial and full versions of Windows Blinds is that the trial verison occasionally (as in every 6 hours or something) gives you a slightly annoying pop-up telling you to buy Windows Blinds.  Stardock also has some other nifty programs, like a boot-screen skinner and a logon-screen skinner, both of which are completely free.  The cursor software is also free, or at least it has a fully functional, no time limit trial version like the other two.  For bootskins, logon screens, cursors, icons, dock skins, full skins, wallpapers, packages, and lots of other nifty stuff, www.wincustomize.com is the place I go.  Most of the stuff is free, but there are some skins that cost money.

Ryumaru I usually just go out and look at the people passing by when I need to imagine a fold situation.

or just place a fabric over a chair and look at the folds pretty closely. lol

that definitely has helped me for more relaxed folds, as well as giving me an idea on how to make more dynamic folds, but a general idea doesnt do enough for the sprite im working on :)

What first put me on guard was that website constantly calling him "Gary Null PhD" but never mentioning what schools he got his degrees from.  After looking up some stuff about him it's clear why it's hidden: they are non-traditional schools that give degrees based on dubious factors.

http://www.quackwatch.org/04ConsumerEducation/null.html
http://dir.salon.com/story/books/feature/2002/05/21/null/index.html

Those are some articles I just quickly found.  Mr. Null seems to say a lot of things with little research to back it up.

I'm not an expert so I can't say that everything he says is wrong or anything.  It just seems to me he uses the conspiracy theory against
the dominant medical field as a way to sell his sketchy products.

Just saying it probably would be best to approach Gary Null and his methods with caution.

well,
Here's a site that talks about quackwatch:
http://www.thebirdman.org/Index/Health/Health-Quack.html

You can find anything online, but that's what makes the internet great.
Personally, I tend to agree with what Gary Null talks about, and the reason I share it is because maybe some others might like it as well and gain something from it.
I try to be open to everything, because if you ignore anything, you cheat yourself of the ability to maximize your understanding.

Yeah, we could play that game all day, but I'm not going to even touch why Birdman Bryant is not the most reputable person to link to.

As for sharing Null's site because you like it, that's fine, I was just pointing out that his methods are not widely accepted and what he "knows" about health is arguable.

Reputation can help I guess, but reputation shouldn't effect information and a persons ability to understand.
A person should be allowed to listen to what he wants without any enforced biases thrown at them by others.
I figure people gain more by experiencing things than listening to others. So if you are open to listening to anyone, you open up more routes to travel through and investigate yourself.

Well the Birdman article only attacks Quackwatch's reputation and doesn't say anything about Gary Null, so I figured that's why you posted it, to diminish the arguments made in the article through diminishing the reputation, which is contradictory to what you're saying now.

Sure, but it's important to listen to different sides and sort through them and decided which parts of which arguments are most valid.  You're posting your beliefs about health, I'm just posting mine...

I once read an article online that said if you have a cavity you shouldn't see a dentist to have it drilled and filled.  As that harms the health of your entire body.  Instead you should put some hippy cream on it, brush with natural hair toothbrush with some sort of hippy paste and WILL THE CAVITY TO HEAL ITSELF.  I think you could also call on Jesus powers.

I don't have much faith in anything said by anyone no matter how qualified they are supposed to be.  But I'm a cynic sarcastic asshole so...

I was watching discovery channel. Ants are awesome. I never knew they actually waged war on termite mounds. They invaded, but, unfortunately, lost.

Ants are the closest reperesentation of humans in the insect world, and they're surprisingly accurate.

I remember watching a black ant hill and a red ant hill having some sort of war in my uncle's driveway once. He was like "Check this out!" And we just sat there on the porch in lawn chairs and watched and waited for the victor. I got up close a few times to see them fighting. They're brutal, they drag around their own to help or feed on them or something and the tear apart the enemy, literally.

The red ants won, by the way. Then we sprayed, flooded and smothered both hills. It's good to be human.

So this one time, a lot of people got caught up in their excitement over nothing astounding.

http://www.ubersite.com/m/84167

That seriousely bugs the crap outta me.  Much much MUCH greater things can be accomplished with MS paint and their treating him like he's god of the program.  He doesn't have hardly any technical pixel-art skills what-so-ever.  Some form of random dithering, and some really screwed up AA, thats it.  Sure, he spent alot of time on it - i give him that, but otherwise, the thing is a piece of crap.

Friends don't let friends use MSPaint. Even super artists like I think Monsoon2d where you can't rightly say 'switch to pro motion' because they rock so hard anyway, it just pains me to think people have to work around such a soddily written program. Please! Graphic's Gale at least! Pro Motion optimally!

wait, that link animation isn't a whole edit of the boktai sprite, is it? Fangame is a minus but perhaps bearable, but once you enter into the realm of edited sprites, especially considering your ability, it's just unacceptable.

fan games is what got me into pixeling in the first place, I started this game a long time ago and have made a lot of the overworld, dungeons and sprites, so I know its a tad pathetic but I still want to complete it

and Im not sure what you mean "a whole edit of the boktai sprite" ???

well, i guess so, i started this project a long time ago and it wasnt really meant to show off my graphic abilities, most of the game uses lttp graphics with a few enhancements anyways... not that impressive, I just wanted to make a zelda game with a good story and nice gameplay.

picked up the new EDGE magazine today and found the url to this site http://www.nesreproductions.com/
how cool is this :D

not in the sense that you can copy commercial roms onto the cartridges, but in the sense that you can make homebrew stuff and actually play it on the console.
i've always wanted to make a NES platformer, i think i need to find me a coder, who wants to do a small project.

Anyone feel like recommending some good but unusal games for the NES? I almost only play NES (and some SNES) games on my computer but im tired of all the usual games and i desperetly need a new one! :)

I can go ahead and recommend Bionic Commando, awsome platform game! You can't jump so instead you need to use a grappling hook (bionic arm) to get around the levels. The only downside is that the bosses sucks and the game is a bit too easy once you get alot of hitpoints and the rocket launcher. I also think they could have done a better job with balancing the weapons and items since the rocket launcher and medicine is by far the best combination.

Im thinking of doing a remake with alot more levels with some better level design so you really need to get skilled with the bionic arm, some rpg-elements, larger variety of items and weapons. Now that would be the best game ever  ;D

Turned 16 yesterday. Yay. I'm older than I've ever been.

And now I'm even older.

And now I'm even older.

And now I'm older still.

Why is this thread so dead?

Oh well, I guess that's a good thing. It's always sad when the off-topic section becomes the liveliest part of a forum.

Anyway... umm...

So I was at work today, at my local sandwich shop, and we get a few orders in. One club sandwich with french fries on the side. I get to work making the club sandwich, and stack the bread, turkey, and lettuce high. 3 layers of sandwich perfection. I put the frilly toothpicks in the sandwich, strategically arranged so that I could cut the sandwich in 4 triangular pieces. I raised the knife into the air, anticipating the slice, and thrust the knife down. I felt a strange pressure on my thumb, and realized that I cut myself. Half my fingernail was gone, and I cut pretty far into my thumb.

Luckily it wasn't busy. It bled for a good hour, and I got to go home early.

That was my day.

to anyone who has been wondering about my new Display name

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conceit

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=conceit

I just love the fact it can be taken as arrogance, sheer wit, an elaborate metaphor or even the act of understanding itself.

I think between all of the definitions it pretty much covers the whole spectrum of my expression.

I just looooooove the fact people dont get it the first time they see it too. I'm in love with the word

Well it seems that it wasn't thrown out of the window, but against the wall. (That spot is now missing paint! LOL..)

We were in a fight, a big one. Discussion on all sorts of things, then she challenged me, I said whatever do it! Then she did it. So it's not entirely her fault, although she's the one who threw the thing. Now I got over it and I forgave her. We are peacefully together again now.

I'm saving for a new Nintendo DS Lite. Might get the black version as a reminder of what happened. (The wrekced one was white) I got all excited about it because I got homebrew running on it 2 days before it broke. Y'know, I'm a programmer.. =(

So I am working on a computer program, and in this program, there is a bar. It starts out with a base color, and people must be able to paint segments of this bar with one of 15 other colors. I am looking for a good pallete for this, and it has the following requirements:

1) The base color must be very distinguishable from the other colors
2) The base color must look like it's in the background
3) The other 15 colors must be distinguishable from each other and from the base color
4) None of the colors can be white or black, since I use black for outlines and white for the overall background color of the application

While I am working on this, I am using the c64 pallette just for fun ^_^ The problem is that, while it is a good pallette for art, it isn't a good pallette when you want 15 distinguishable-at-a-glance colors.

Anyone have a suggestion for me? =)

After the horror I experienced when finding out about bad megaman sprite comics and the abomination that is Sonic sprite edits, I present to you the mother of bad art: Runescape sigs!

Hmm.. I trying to think why people who play runescape usually go onto pixel art.. (not noting the fact I did play it at one point) but then those who always pixel (poorly) their character in the beast armour with the greatest weapon.. regardless of the fact they don't have it!

 ???

Those kinda runescape forums are like breeding grounds for new pixel artists really. Its how I got interested myself. Its not all crap to be honest.

Random:

Etc. There are dozens of beautiful pieces of works on these forums, but sadly, theres 10 times as more people asking for ratings of their first pixel art.

Yea, you have to sift through alot of crap, but on any large runescape forum, theres always 4 or 5 good artists.

5 good artists on one forum vs 200 newbies = a very crappy forum. I don't see how wasting time on a forum where you'll get scarcely good crits and where all other threads are lousy can be a fun pass-time...

Because I have friends there. Obviously, Im not going to get fantastic crits when posting there, but its nice to talk with friends etc. The artists on the sites I like know each other and are pals.

Next question: What's with the silly sample tags on everything? I can't even see what you draw...

What I draw? I thought it would be presumptuous of me to use my own work as an example, so I used others. The reason the text is on there is to stop people from stealing the art. I dont agree with the practice becuase a competent artist could remove them pretty easily, but its sickening how many idiots think they can just slap their name on something and use it themselves. Its just some peoples way of having a sense of pseudo security I guess.

So noone gets to see the full art, ever?

Because, really, that's like putting an expensive painting in a safe, and never getting it out...

Only when its done and someone is using it. Until then, when people want crits, they dont want others to steal.

Dont ask me, the idea is flawed, but like I said, its pseudo security to them, makes them feel secure I guess.

I don't think that comparison holds up very well.

The best comparison would be a gallery full of posters with tags that say "Real painting is in security safe", that's even lamer

That would exclude the possibility of seeing it Gil. Many samples are transperant, and dont cover the whole sig. Why are we arguing about this?

I know what you're talking about, but haven't the slightest idea as to what the song was.
