zabord bird

on: April 02, 2009, 09:51:17 pm
oi!

i've not posted here in a while, but that's also 'cause i haven't pixeled in a while.  in any case, i started pixeling this character off a sketch i did recently.  here's my progress so far.

ignore the two colors above the bird.  i only used the bottom one anyway.
he's meant to be viewed at 2x:

(zoomed for the firefox users)

i wanted him to look more like the sketch but started moving away from it, as you can see.  no legs.

i'd absolutely love some crits.  i took too long picking the colors. :[

I like him though I didn't think the 1 pixel eyes cut it, they're too close in comparison to said sketch.

My quick edit may not even be legit but I liked him so I decided to edit it.

thanks souly :]

i found different ways of adding texture to him (the bottom two) and still have a few edits to do as suggested by punaji members.  i like the way you did the texture, but i don't want it all around.  it almost defeats the simplicity and just adds a lot of information to the sprite.  as for the legs, i wanted him to roll, something like loco roco, but i could see him wobbling too.

i modified the eyes (along with some other things) from the original drawing to purposely be like that.  i didn't like how when i spread his eyes apart he looked real stupid, i mean in terms of personality.

still working on it...tried some AA on the top right

I'd dull the brightest green a little. Right now, it's too bright, it even pains me a little.

I did this quick edit to dull out the colors.

It looks like an apple now  shading makes it. (So try to reduce it and add more textures  :))
I love the legs you have keep them.

You can "Disagree" me but well... that's just my opinion.

thanks guys.  the thing with the green i chose is that it doesn't look bright enough.  i even adjusted my monitor but then everything was very high contrast.  i did remove that heap of a shadow and add some texture to try and add form.  dunno how well this works.  i may be overworking this whole piece :[

hell yes gnarf you hit the nail on the head. much more dynamic and interesting to look at,

i'm not really sure if you want to add anything else? the design is pretty simplistic? but i think the beak would benefit with some AA, but aside from that, tis all good. love it.

ha, I thought the shadowed version was far more interesting - it actually had form to it. Now it's just a fat nondescript blob.

Overall, the design is amusing. Reminds me of The Behemoth logo.

thanks a bunch guys, i really think i may just stay with the flatter version i posted before this.  i also did some aa on the beak using the existing colors.  but for the sake of experimenting, i tried some other feather textures.
