[WIP] Tough Guy (color and shading)

on: March 27, 2009, 01:26:48 am
Hello Pixelation!
I haven't posted in years, but I've been lurking and I got the urge to pixel so I dusted off the wacom tablet and busted this rough sketch out in GIMP.

C+C welcome  :)

You should probably clean your lines and possibly color it. :-\

Pecks are flat. Contour of head and ear really bugs me where they share an edge, a knife and a gun?, elvis hair could be a little more like a crew cut unless this is a 50's tough guy, don't crop his feet - design the whole thing and crop the final result if you need to, cartoony proportions are cool but that head is as tall as his body which seems excessive. Reference Duke Nukem for this.

Thanks for the feedback.

-The contour of the head was bothering me too so I fixed it.
-It is a 50's influenced tough guy, and yes he needs both a gun and a knife  :P
-Thanks for pointing out his pecks, I knew something seemed kinda weird about that area.
-His head is really tall, but I'm thinking about keeping it like that because I do tend to exaggerate things in my illustrations.
-His muscles still look kinda weird to me. Any suggestions?
-Finally, I didn't crop his feet. I just didn't draw them at first. I'm at work so I'll have to do the feet when I get home because I don't have my Wacom tablet with me.

Also, I suck at drawing feet. If anyone could kind of point me in the right direction I would love them forever.

C+C more pls  ;D

Ok so I suck at choosing a good palette.
I'm also terrible with anatomy.
Here's some very basic coloring, still no feet.

If anyone knows of any good tutorials on choosing colors, please let me know!

I'd suggest googling some muscley men.  Right now it looks like he's got two biceps, his deltoids are horizontal, and his tricep is on the side of his arm.  Also not sure about the highlight coming up from the shirt, is that his pec extending all the way to his traps?

So i cleaned up the shading a good bit and added some feet.

And like I said before I suck at anatomy so the muscles aren't correct but they still look good I think.

Edit: First result for "muscles" in Google images:

I'd say the muscles look about the same on these guys.

And yes, I know that's not real, but it's funny.

The first thing I thought when I saw this was, "whoa! Double bicep!"

Quick edit just on his arm.

Basically, his deltoid was too small compared to his bicep and tricep, and his carpi radialis (on the upper left part of the image) managed to crawl up his arm a ways, thus making it look like he had two biceps on that arm. Other than that, he's looking pretty swell; I love his expression.

Thanks for the references and the edit, Kcilc. I see what was wrong with the muscles now, here's an update:
