Platform Character Animation

on: March 22, 2009, 07:24:13 am
Please critique the run cycle before I move on to finishing it up. How does it look to you?

Edit: Added Idle wip too.

Edit: Added Jump.

Edit: Basic platform concept with a less busy idle.

Any ideas on how to shade the black? I can't seem to see how to shade it being such a low amount of pixels to work with. I think I'm going to make the platforms look more circular by bringing the center part of grass down some and shading on the left and right darker.

Well, I like this. Your little guy's got some character. The blue leg in the run cycle is a little odd, it looks like it just jumps from the very back to the very front, I'm not on my own computer and I've got no graphics editing programs here but I would guess moving the passing position of the right foot forward slightly would help the transition from the back to the front. I also don't think you really need to shade the black, it looks fine as it is IMHO. The rounded floating platforms look good, but I would put him in front of them, instead of behind them.

Did a bit of a tweak to the main shape. Did a walk cycle too. Some palette changes as well. I like this better. What do you think.
Pawige: I will put him on top of the grass. I see what you mean.

Excellent work!
You're making the most out of the low frame count.

The AA/shading is doing nothing to me though. What is he supposed to be?
He's got a lot of character but his head does not read very well.
Is he an ant or a walking grain of rice or what is he?

Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate them. I have attached a quick (read crappy) sketch of the character. He is supposed to be original. Imagine his head is made of Sculpy or clay.(If you've ever played the Neverhood, it's a big inspiration to me) I've been drawing the character for a while now (on paper I still can't get drawing on my wacom down) and have refined the look to what I want. Maybe a Title screen with the character larger will explain his look and details to the players?
