Portraits, and eventually other sprites

on: March 20, 2009, 07:00:28 pm
Hello Pixelation! Me and my buddies are making a game, and I got assigned with the art making. So here I am, hoping to learn how to create fine pixel art!

The game is going to be a simple shmup, with an oceanic type of setting. So there's eventually going to be some artillery-equipped boats, sea monsters (and aliens) and all that good stuff.

But for now, I'm going to concentrate on making the in-game portraits. These are going to be used in the "select ship-screen", as well as for some in-game dialogue (hopefully, there will be various face expressions added later on).

This is what I've managed to create so far:

And this is the reference:

Well, there are some obvious flaws, but I simply do not know what to do with them, or where I even go from here on. I haven't relied on the reference all that much, just used it to get the basic shapes. Also, I'm trying for a somewhat simplified image, not adding all the single strays of hair for example (and I probably won't add the hat either, I don't want it to be a part of the game). I am, however, wanting to add more depth and some detail. To the hair for example, but I have no idea of how to make the shape stand out more, or how to handle the highlights.

And that's that. I'm hoping to get some guidance, so that I finally will be able to make som headway. Looking forward to it!

Hello Charlieton,
I've nothing to say 'bout the avatar you made, maybe I'd add some more lighting to the hair, but nothing more. IMHO.

Anyway, 'bout the shmup, maybe a good thing is to know how is its view: horizontal scroller, isometric and such things.

looking forward to see new pics ;)
