Scott Pilgrim Vol. 5 Back Cover

on: March 17, 2009, 03:57:31 am
I keep meaning to post these and then I keep forgetting... these are three pieces I did for Scott Pilgrim Volume 5's back cover. We arranged them so it'd basically look like a NES box, with the weird curved frames and everything. (You should buy the book and see for yourself :P) It's already been printed so it's kind of too late to change anything, but any feedback would be super helpful for future reference.

The NES palette is used but NES hardware restrictions were not strictly adhered to. Basically we wanted it to look like how people remember 8-bit games, not how they actually were.

Awesome! I was hoping you'd post them here. :)

I love the way you depicted subspace! All the characters' expressions in the Sex Bob-omb scene really reflect their stage personalities! (Is Stephen Stills a lefty? I am too lazy to check. :P)

I wonder, is the robot in the first image supposed to represent any particular character in SP canon?

Great work! :y:

I love that last one.

Man... I wish I had an attractive female amazon.com delivery girl to pine over.

How did you get a chance to work with Bryan?

Ha!  I didn't know you did those :D  highfives man!

I was a little let down by volume 5 otherwise, felt pretty scattered and aimless compared to 3 and especially 4, but maybe that was just me.

Pine over? Kim Pine?! Oho! (Kim is mine!)

I loved the character development in 5 (especially Kim's) but several sections seemed SO RUSHED (ie: the fight with the twins). Also, the twins' characters were so underdeveloped compared to Ramona's other exes'! Overall the volume was maddeningly short. I sort of felt like BLOM short-changed us just to make the deadline for once.... I'd rather get more comic even if I'd have had to wait longer.

Ben, do you have any other assets for this project that you/O'Malley/Oni decided against using? I'd be interested in seeing those!

Fancy stuff, Bob.  I like the third one especially, as it links me back to all those corrupted diskettes and that irritation you'd get after waiting five minutes for a game to load.  Now it all seems funny.  The first one reminds me of the original Duke Nukem (or was in Nukum?) games; and the second in turn more of a recent Guitar Hero craze.

I'd gladly see how that looks in print.
