The female face

on: February 25, 2009, 11:34:26 pm
i'm more than a little frustrated with this now. i think this perhaps stems from the fact that i've never been able to render the female form well -probably because no ladies ever volunteered for life drawing... anyway

here's the basics of what i'm trying to achieve: i need to produce a female character's face in a style matching an earlier work, the male character. intended use is 300%.

i just can't seem to get it looking female in an attractive way...

also just started work on a background (quite wip but construction pointers really appreciated). i'm hoping its about ready to go in with details. eg posters, table legs, wood textures?

ps hello, i'm back from 3 months on the transsiberian!

Update on the room:

I would really appreciate any thoughts on how to handle the A frame beams.

Still also hopeful for some female face thoughts...

Also started another room: (Think I better stop here till I've finalised the first room and the palette)

I don't think the problem is with the female face.

I think the problem is the male face is too feminine. In fact, the phrase "bearded lady" comes to mind. And the girlish hairdo does not help.

Make the face of the man more manly and give him a more masculine haircut and I think your problem will be solved.

*EDIT*

I took a shot at editing the female face.

Thanks Evil-Eye. It looks like Tsunade! I've tried to shade the face a little more delicately and tried a slight palette edit too. I think the forehead might be working.
I hope its not the male face otherwise i'll be forced into some rather long nights *_*

Does anyone else see a man-woman with a beard?

Anyway what do people think of the 4 above at 300% which is more feminine and in a neutral/happy expression.

I don't see a man-woman, but the female does have a stronger brow and sharper features.

the A-frame beams -  something like this, maybe?

I really like the second face, but is that not EvilEye's edit of yours? I think on the others, the pupil of the eye not showing makes them look strange/creepy. The woman could use some more femininity and the male could use some more masculinity, but in my opinion, I don't see any huge problems, and if I this were some kind of game I was playing, or so, I wouldn't really notice or care.

I can say that I like the style you have in the hair of the male sprite.

The female does need a bit of work, I say give her rougher eyelashes, and make sure they stick out more at the edges, to give it that, like "I'm so hot" girl feel to it.  I have no clue why, honestly, but I think that would make it look more female.

But, I love the design you've put into the walls, it looks dirty, which looks best in most games.

I hate it when this happens to other threads... A quick note to say I got some urgent commissions but will be back to this.

Thanks Tocky and Dr D. Will take into account when I next update

Also you're gonna probably want vertical beams on the walls to be holding those frames up.
