Urban Characters

on: January 20, 2009, 11:32:36 am
Just waiting on a level editor from the coder of my other project in the meantime.

TomF's piece got me wanting to try miguel's style.
I'm sure I've gone completely off the intended goal to do something close to his stuff.
I know my problem is I've created un-nessisary folds, and use of the black, where as ndeal's stuff is cleaner.
I wont have a problem if I'm showen the error in my anatomy via a quick trace over, even a stick figure helps.

The images surrounding the WIP sketch is what started this whole thing.
TomF's work on the left.
The artist of all the work on the bottom is from http://ndeal.deviantart.com/

Oh man I remember those pieces back at the old pixelation in 2004. Somehow I had it in my head Jawsh made them.
I think Ptoing actually made the outlines of that angry bigheaded one.

Anyway about your piece just keep going but maybe take off the blacks inside outlines. AA and selout gogo

What strikes me most in miguel's work is the bold foreshortening and camera angle. It's lacking in your pieces. Also, most pieces I saw from him, both vectors and pixel art, contain two primary colors, yours has just one.

It's a great piece though, just not really miguel's style, except for the urban theme

Something about the red guys pose just seems off to me.  Like he is off balance.  So far I really like the way the clothes are rendered but the pose is killing it for me.  It could also be that I think his arm is way too long, but that may be style.  Even if it is style his arms unbent would to his shins, provided his fingers weren't clenched.  Another thing is I'm not sure why he is doing this pose.  It kinda reminds me of the Fonz, AAAAAAaaaaaa.

Here I was trying to do your pose and I came up with this.  It might help you, might not.

I thank you for the picture, it will be of help for sure. :]
He's a bit more hysterical then you are so he's got the arched back and falling back head if that makes sense.

Here is a small gif to help you understand the reason for the pose.

and one for the hell of it.

it doesn't make sense for production but if you consider that 1 - this is an art piece, 2 - there is no WALL, and 3 - graffiti nowadays is more about performance and cultivating a personal image than a real product i think the pose is fine.

that said i find the DJ piece far more promising for compositional flow, colors, and believe it or not - character.  the red one's attributes seem a bit gimmicky, while the green guy seems more interesting for his unadorned look.

a crit on the red guy - the solid, weighty quality of the spray is counterintuitive, which i think was the point, but i think in this case it brings an awkwardness rather than a fresh twist.

some crits on the green guy - the hard verticals of the green and even the fairly rigid lines of the setup are at odds with the piece - i'd suggest maybe some overdone perspective on them or to work with some sort of cartoony distortion for "showing the sound."  Also, we might go to different parties, but the DJs I know don't often sit :P
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

I had thought the legs would be kind of like.
Then again I could just be copying the other dudes legs.

Yea I've been trying to think of a decent way to make the music like either flow out of the speakers, or in the background or something.
