Wipppah!

on: January 18, 2009, 04:51:55 pm
Help me make this not suck :C

Frames:

It should move fast enough to work well in a platforming environment, but it just looks very off.
She's holding a wip, I don't know why it slows down after the first swipe.

the return of the whip i think is whats doing it,

also the actual whip is more a wrist action instead of an arm actuin

your choice of color, is your voice of color

Hey Mozzy,

I think the main issue is that you have a lot of frames after the motion blur, moving the whip just a little bit. This makes it look like the whip slows down for no reason. Here I removed frames 4, 5, and 6, and a bunch of the frames after the whip. I also modified the motion blur so there was more of it at the tip then the base. I think it gives the whip more pop:

The other issue is what is going on after the whip hits. It looks like he is sort of moving it up, then down and back, but it is not very readable. I would add one motion after the actual whip crack, where he is pulling the whip back to the idle position, and probably wouldn't motion blur it.

Hope this helps a little.

I moved frame 4, made it frame 2, changed it up so the whip had that slack before the snap.
Also changed frame rate to 8

how is this whipping motion happening?  what are the forces behind it?  motion blur and quick frames isn't enough to convince the eye that this arm is a proper whip.
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

I've messed with the timing a bit, as I think that's the major problem here. You're not portraying the energy being built up and released at all, every frame has the same time on it, and it all just blurs into one fast animation that has no 'oomph' behind it.

just research it. Do you know how a whip works? do you know why it makes it's crackling sound?

The whip grows gradually thinner towards the tip, this makes it a movement amplifier, so weilding a whip is all about the technique, with proper technique the tip will reach supersonic speed and make a Sonic Boom, THIS is the so familiar crackling sound.

So go, find out whip weilding techniques and how whip weilders make archs of movement in order to build up the supersonic speed.

If you want animation examples for a whip look for "whip" in KOF the chinese emugif page is bound to have plenty.

One swipe then putting it away.
Unintentionally made it look like shes inching a little bit each time.
