PJ Portrait [WIP]

on: January 12, 2009, 12:17:17 pm
Arnes palette, dogmeats idea, my face.

I use a small mirror next to me, but my aim is at the moment not to make it look like me as much as possible now, its hard enough without that too. Anyway, here is my wip!

Any tips?  ;D

Im feeling lucky about this. This is topic nr 7777 o.O

Anyway
I slightly changed the nose, but further more I think it looks like me ;).
I wish I knew what to do with the hair.

With a camera I get a static image, I think its more learnful (for me) to use this mirror now :). Also I can slightly change my pose or whatever when I want, and I can check things about volume just by rotating my head ;)

wait wait wait, weird shading was much better than no shading at all! Right now he's just brown! Just choose a lightsource, determine what areas are the most hit by the light and put the highlights there! you were on the right track! Don't lose it!

Yes the latest is too lacking in shading but it does make one change I really like and removes the dithering which only made your skin look grainy.  So I would spread that highlight but keep with not having any dithering.

Also, you're definitely right about what you said about using a mirror.  Always work from life if you can afford to, don't use photographs unless it's necessary (though with self portraits it can be hard to pose yourself and work at the same time but if you can pull it off go for it).

I never really realized before that much that you can add so much more contrast without changing the palette!

Dogmeat made me this beautiful edit:

I realized that the yellow would not look that bright and weird, if I made the dark part darker.
And so I did, basing my edit a lot on Dogmeats version

I think there is a lot of improvement, and I surely learned a lot, but now again its not really finished. I am not to sure about the hair, it needs to more like me and other things just need some more attention from me too.
But... what do you guys think now?
All your help is still more than helpful :)

I messed with it some more to see if this would work.

But it didn't ;)

I feel its finished. Do you guys too?
Also, I have discovered that Arnes palette really is not made for portraits, but I liked the challenge to make something of it :)

It still looks rather rough to me. Try to refine it some more.
Lot's of rough lines still, lack of AA where there could be.

And yeah I'm not so sure about using Arne's pallete here. But that's your choice.
